I was diagnosed by a pediatrist. He gave me some anti-inflammatories for when it comes back. Said that was it.

I made the mistake of going to a podiatrist. After all, most gout attacks are in the foot (usually big toe) so seeing a podiatrist made sense to me. Well my podiatrist, who  had treated me successfully for a number of foot problems, was clueless about gout.  So I suffered attacks for a number of years before mentioning it to my primary physician.

Podiatrists are not "real" doctors, and I don't think they can prescribe allopurinol (because I don't think they can diagnose gout) which is probably why he gave you anti-inflammatories.

Seriously though, look...  No Murphy, Eaton, Zimmerman (to speak of), Taylor thoroughly sucking extreme cow patties, Harper hitting .230, bullpen regressing impressively since last year.   It's a miracle we're only a couple of games out of first place.  When bullpen improves and all our injured guys come back, we should be alright, no?

That's how I see it (at least the injured guys part; forget the bullpen).

Question is will Eaton and Murphy come back this season (I'll believe it when I see them on the field in a game) and, if/when they do come back, how long before they are re-injured. As for Zim, I don't really care if he comes back or not. This year, or any other for that matter. MAT? Shoulda traded him for a middle inning reliever (my guess is Rizzo tried). What's Goodwin's status?

Ray is correct. See below. Your podiatrist just alleviated the pain and did nothing to help you control the uric acid that collects in your foot. It is your body not being able to metabolize protein. Just google gout but your primary care guy should not be your first choice. See either a urologist or rheumotologist.

I wouldn’t even see a urologist, and I’d only see rheum if it’s bad. Your primary care doc can handle it. Just check a uric acid and then treat until it goes down. I’ve seen folks brought to their knees with gouty attacks. There are newer treatment but the standard of care is allopurinol. So if your levels are high and you have had an attack before it’s likely you will get it again. And it’s not fun.

It's a metaphor. Replace Gout with Marlins and you will decode their secret, on topic, discussings.

Thanks y'all. The attacks I have had we're not pleasant. Usually my right big toe and top of the same foot into my ankle. Have kept me limping for weeks at a time and sensitive to the touch.

After reading about it... apparently I need to cut back on the steak and wine, but what kind of life would that be?!?!

No fun. Take Allopurinol. Eat what you want.  :D

Don't do it.  There is no clear consensus within the medical community.  Foods high in purine level are to be avoided.  Foods high in nutritional value particularly antioxidants are beneficial.  Many foods are high in both.  Spinach for example.  One doctor will tell you avoid spinach at all cost. Another will tell you eat as much spinach as you can. Wine too - my advice would be drink as much wine as possible.  Red meat -  yeah, you might want to cut back.   Eat lots of dark (tart) cherries or chery juice.

Having said all that ... allopurinol can supersede the whole diet discussion, it did for me.

No, thankfully we have the Marlins. But we'll never catch the Barves.

Eat the " bad " foods in moderation like red meat , organ meats ,seafood , cut back on the wine and monitor the uric acid levels because you can create kidney stones ( talk about pain). But get on whatever meds your Dr. prescribes and take them. I don't disagree with anything that has been said in this discussion.

Well yeah, I did have a kidney stone a few years ago.  I'd much rather have gout.

Our medical histories seem to parallel. AbaltoNat attack , for those who haven't experienced it , is like a severe ankle sprain. The one that you would have been better off breaking it .

Literally the last 2 pages of this thread are about the gout.  Let's see how long we can keep it going.  I've never had the gout, but I've learned a lot about it recently.

Yes, the first time I had an attack I thought I had broken all the small bones on the top of my foot.

Maybe Zimm had gout on the down low when everyone said he had the plantar fasciitis?

I have both and apparently bone spurs in my heal. Wear a boot at night to keep my Achilles tendon stretched out for that. Ugh.

You should make an appointment with the Nats crack medical staff ASAP. I'm sure they will recommend amputation and then transplant your body parts to Murph and Eaton. Sounds like a win-win to me as you will be pain free and we get back two key players. Think about it. Take one for the team.
