first preference is going to be to get something for the position player who must go when Doo is ready, so no DFA / waiver / release yet.  Work on a deal. 6 man bench is not stable in the modern, 5 man rotation, heavy bullpen usage era.

They are rolling the dice a bit with a 6 man pen against the Braves, but with Stras, Gio, and Scherzer, they are hoping for 2 deep starts.  If either Miller or Grace has options (I forget), they may get sent down for Solis if they have to pitch long in either the Gio or the Strasburg starts.

Glad we pulled Zim off the DL to sit on the bench

@MarkZuckerman
#Nats have traded Brian Goodwin to the #Royals for minor league pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan. They've also recalled Sammy Solis from AAA, giving them a 7-man bullpen again.

that's a good spot for Goodwin.  He'll get playing time.  Second division club right now.  They've been playing a guy Rosell Herrera in a platoon in center with Paulo Orlando.  Herrera was a waiver acquisition who plays v. righties. I'm guessing they try Goodwin out there.

Frankly, even if Bryce goes, Stevenson can be a 5th OF next year and this year if needed.

Strasburg back to the DL, retro to July 22nd.  Per Janes and yesterday's MLB.com transaction report.

It’s time we all realize that he’s not built to be a starter and make him a closer. He would thrive in that role. 1 inning of max effort.

Does he have the closer's mentality?  Seems to me like he's got more of a Jeff Weaver presence on the mound.

Doesn't The Flower tend to get hit hard in first innings? Joke's on us. Aside from Maximus Effort, the SR was always a crapshoot.

:lmao:

I'm wondering if this is why Stras was so upset after his start. He knew he'd re-aggrevated something.

Stras is so mentally fragile, he would never handle being a closer.

Yep. hotshot on the Sobering thread July 21:
"I think I'd find Strasburg's 30+ days on the DL each season a lot more annoying than Max's chatter.  Not to mention him getting hit hard too regularly for a supposed #1 caliber starter. If Stras wasn't just coming off a long DL stint, you can bet he'd be about to go on that list. That's a pattern for him. Gets hit hard, immediately goes on DL. Another bad start, you're likely to see him back on the DL."

Related to his previous shoulder injury per Janes.  I saw a few tweets saying Milone will get the call.

So he's making up the injury to cover for a bad outing?  So funny.

Pinched nerve is his neck.

The baseball gods are literally like "your closer is out for a month, your #2 starter is back on the DL, your entire lineup is trash...trade off pieces!!"

Janes tweeted the same thing about him, essentially.  I LOL'ed.

"Obviously, was taken by surprise by this move, but at the same time, it fits. My time-tested, hard-and-fast rule: If Strasburg doesn't pitch well, he doesn't think he is right. He must not have felt he was right Friday (perhaps part of frustration displayed). Results support it."

More likely that the shoulder was not healed all the way when he came back. It's amazing to me how people cannot accept arm injuries from pitchers. Guys like Max are the exception.

What is it with Nats pitchers' necks and Miami?  Team needs to start staying in Lauderdale or something.

Assuming they go to a strip club where the stage is at an awkward angle.
