In what role? He started all season. Can't imagine using him out of the pen.

Outside of September callups, he's probably 8th on the depth chart.

Probably just September. I'd rather see him than guys like McGowin, Williams, or Voth in a spot-start role, but I'm biased. He's only a starter so probably September call-up. He's already 24 and an accomplished college pitcher so they should be aggressive with him.

probably our next call-up if a starter goes down and Hellickson isn't ready to return, particularly since Voth hasn't been very good at Fresno (4.11 ERA in his last 10 starts).

Joe Ross is getting stretched out as a starter. Unless someone goes down in the next week or so, he's next up on the block. Also McGowin is probably going to get a start before Crowe.

Yea. I just don't think Crowe's game is going to translate well right away.

If he maintains those numbers in the PCL he's ready to come up.

nobody has those numbers in the PCL

Seems like he was both lucky and unlucky in AA.  A WHIP of 1.12 and only 2 HRs over 95 innings, plus nearly a K per inning, would make you think his ERA should have been lower, but I can't believe the 2 HRs isn't lucky.

2 HR definitely seems extreme, but I believe he profiles as a classic #4/5 starter who pounds the ball into the dirt, and he's super experienced for a AA prospect, so maybe not that unlucky, but I'm just guessing.

he's been pretty awful as of late.  ERA is now at 5.10 for the season, and 5.16 over his last 10 starts, 61 IP, 61H, 20BBs, 56Ks, 35 ERs.

I don't know what the curve is for pitching in the PCL, but it doesn't look like he's ready to take the next step.

K rate and  K:BB look good even in this tough stretch.  I think they'd have him at Harrisburg if they thought he was going to be needed this season.  If Voth can get healthy and Fedde and Ross can go good start, bad start, I don't see a huge need for him this year.  Figure he'll pitch the year in Fresno, then maybe hang out in DC for the stretch to get acclimated.  Not sure there's a 40 man spot for him and I don't think we need to add him this winter.

That's not quite true. Hes not at 5.10 for the season. That's his AAA era. He was at 3.87 at AA, and now sits at 4.16 for the year.

He just blew up for 7 runs in 4 innings in his latest AAA start. His previous 4 AAA starts were 26ip, 24 H, 22/11 k/bb, 10 ER for a 3.46ERA.

Hes not pitching that bad.

My mistake. I meant 5.10 at AAA. Thanks for catching that.

Even if you factor out the 7 run game on 8/5, he's still posted a 4.42 ERA over the previous 9 starts.   Again, I don't know what the PCL curve would be.   His walk rate is pretty low (about 2.5/9) which is good.

Splits show lefties hitting .378 off of him.  We probably won't throw him against LA. :)

Crowe is really struggling now.  In his last five starts: 22.2 IP, 27 ERs 14BBs, 18 Ks.  Over his last 10 starts his ERA is at 6.11.

It's a big jump to Triple A right now. Inflated numbers and a new baseball.

The ERAs in Fresno are insane.  It has to be tough on a young pitcher's psyche to pitch in that league.

For perspective, the PCL league average ERA is 5.52.  In MLB it's almost exactly a run lower.   In that vein, Crowe's about where a guy would be with a 5.75 after 9 starts in MLB, variance-wise.  It's not good, but it's not panic-worthy either.  He's 2 years younger than Fedde and so far seems to be on a broadly similar development path (sans the mistake of bringing him up too early).  That's also not great, but there are worse outcomes.

Had a nice breaking ball.  I don't like fly ball  pitchers without a lot of Ks.  Back of the rotation, probably. Also, I think he was a bit rushed to the majors in this context.  Could use another half year in the minors.

Cate is pretty similar stuff (with even less fastball) just in a smaller lefthanded body that hasn't pitched above A-ball.  There's no reason to expect any degree of MLB success from him right now.

And you're putting way too much stock in one start of a guy who made his MLB debut midseason, throwing to MLB hitters after not pitching in a game that counted for almost an entire year.  He's not going to be a front-end guy.  He doesn't have the stuff for it and never has.  But he's the best bet they have for immediately useful back-end performance of anyone not on the MLB roster right now.
