They're playing good baseball, you know, just one bad pitch here and there. We had some good at bats, hit balls hard, can't control where there go. Just need to be ready to come back tomorrow and score a bunch of runs.

Your sarcasm aside, this is a potent offense that was held in check for 7 innings.

If the pen pitched like this all the time, I'd be in the camp of getting late inning relievers.

He's trying to get back to Mr. Positive mode, but his words don't match his demeanor.

Just need to fix the little things and win more of these one run games.

This was a depressing loss for me because it's likely the season in microcosm.

If by little things, you mean the 8th inning reliever, sure.

Naw, this was a tough loss, but they played well. They're not a good offensive ball club, but the pen got them out of jams and kept the game close until the 8th inning monster came out

This is fine.

A reporter pointed out to Nationals manager Dave Martinez that local sports talk radio has tried in recent days to solve the team's bullpen woes.

Martinez: "Tell 'em good luck.”

Anybody see anything wrong this attitude? As a manager, you have to carry yourself differently than a fan on a message board. You can’t concede. You have to support your players. Have faith. This guy’s a joke. Truly helpless.

Wtf. Please tell me this is not real and you are Slating.

Nod to you, slateman.

But seriously, this did not happen, right?

Martinez manages a game well

Oh but he said something funny off handed. Well fire him.

I don't think they played particularly well.  Difo needs to charge the ball and make a play on the Kingery grounder, Rendon probably should have made the play on the grounder he got charged an error, Soto absolutely has to get the tie runner to 3rd with nobody out in the 9th, and the Zimm send is still questionable (but I understand why it was done).  Other than that, I agree with DM.

Haven't counted but it seems it likely Martinez's teams has suffered more one run loses than any other manager in Nats history

life with a bad bullpen and a mediocre lineup

one-run wins are a lot easier when your bullpen is reliable and you have a lineup of guys who can get the job done late. look at zimm last night. man on 2nd, one out, top 9 down a run, closer on the ropes. womp womp. i feel like "Mr. Walk Off" is a nickname he got because he had some big hits on piss-poor teams from 2006-2009 and he's never actually been all that "clutch"

Ding ding. It's just nostalgia at this point.

Do you guys know about some type of baseball that I am unfamiliar with? The one where players can get hits at will and place the ball with precision?

Zimm has a .785 OPS "late and close" according to BR. .798 "high leverage." .766 in innings 7-9. Love the guy but, his "clutchness" is overstated. I felt no confidence with him in the box last night.

The bad bullpen explains blown leads and blow outs, but not the close losses. If we lose by one run we were good enough to win the game, the loss can be tracked to a bad play or bad decision. This was a problem last year that continues so far this season. This team has no killer instinct to will their way to victory.
