i don't disagree with your overall premise - latin stars are not going to be full of national ad campaigns - but there have been loads of big-time international MLB. david ortiz, manny ramirez, sammy sosa, pablo sanchez....

Yea.  Big Papi and Manny had so much personality and played in Boston, a huge market and baseball town.  Had Papi and Manny been on the Padres...doubt they are stars.  Sammy played for the beloved Cubs and was part of the home run chase craze with McGwire.  It just takes exceptional circumstances.

Weren't Pedro and Vlad super popular in Montreal? I just think baseball was in a different spot 15 years ago than it is today.

In what other major sport are there so many stars that aren't American?  My point is very much valid whether you buy it or not.  If all the Latino stars were American, you would see a lot more baseball players doing commericials in the states.

Assuming I buy into your premise that foreigners are not valuable marketing assets, here are some MLB stars that are American off the top of my head...Harper, Trout, Verlander, Kershaw, Votto, Arenado, Stanton, Judge, Bryant, Betts, Bumgartner, Scherzer, DeGrom....

A person is a star (at least the type mlb wants) if my mom knows who they are. Of your list the only ones that qualify are Harper and maybe Judge.

And to counter the English thing, Shohei Ohtani doesn’t speak a lick of English and he’s one of the more popular players in the league.

I'd argue the only 2 players in the national sports conversation are Harper and Trout. Trout simply because he's so damn good (so the conversation is, "why isn't MLB marketing him"), Harper because of his hype and just the attention he can command.

I'd also argue the biggest baseball star today is A-Rod, still.

alex ovechkin speaks amazing english!

No he doesn't. He speaks English but to say it's amazing is not true. He often does not understand the questions he is asked because he isn't familiar with the nuances of the language.

Athletes market to sports fans for the most part. For others like your mom, all they have to know is "that guy is a famous baseball player and he eats Subway sandwiches" like Kershaw.

My mom (rest her soul) would say, "I hope you never lick your fingers like that when you eat a sammich."

You and I are in agreement there. Those Kershaw commercials were gross.

This seems apt

https://deadspin.com/tommy-g-people-on-the-street-try-to-name-a-famous-a-1826084204

I'd be willing to bet VaRK's money that more people know a famous baseball player than know their representative in Congress  ....  or their state capital.

New Jersey and Westchester are not New York City boroughs.
