The Strasburg Shutdown
1. I think people are overestimating the effect Strasburg would have had in the playoffs. He was clearly feeling the effects of his first full season and honestly, I'm not sure how effective he would have been in the playoffs. It's not like his next two starts in the postseason were anything special.

2. Harvey has been a disaster since not being shut down. Frankly, the decision likely kept Strasburg in baseball for the next few years.

But overall the story completely overlooks how poorly the Nationals have played in big moments. Say what you want about Matt Williams decisions, but the players allowed Jake Peavy, Tim Hudson, Yusmeiro Petit, and Ryan Vogelsong to dominate their lineup.

Baker more than earned his keep in two years. The Nationals won 95 games in 2016 and 97 in 2017. And while they once again fell short in the postseason, it's hard to pin those failures squarely on Baker.

Utter and complete bullcrap. Baker failed to manage his team even remotely competently in 2017. Starting Werth was a catastrophe, bringing in Sammy Solis was moronic, and letting Gio go back out was bafoonery. Sorry, but Baker deserved to be fired.

Another piece of trash from Bleacher Report.

Not a single word of original reporting. Just rehashing stuff we've read all year.

That's the state of aggregation journalism

They might want to do one about how the Angels have completely ruined the Trout era thus far but probably won't get around to it since they're so busy Nats bashing.

I agree with these sentiments.  Strasburg was running on fumes.

The Angels did it almost exclusively through bad contracts.

Honestly,  if the Angel's are going to do it, this is the offseason to trade Trout. Not too many teams could make the trade, but a couple could. The Braves could, the Phillies could maybe, but the Dodgers are probably the best bet if they're willing to include Walker, Urias, and Bellinger in the deal.

Robles is not ready. Any discussion of him being a replacement for Harper is hubris right now

I don't think he will ever be a replacement for Harper. They are very different kinds of outfielders. But I think he will be a dynamic impact player as soon as next year.

It's just a tad bit early to make that kind of judgement. He'll be audtioning the rest of the month and we'll all have a little more time to see what he's got to offer.

Exactly. Slate is hilarious. He counsels patience with a scrub reliever like Williams but is ready to judge a prize prospect like Robles. Anything to be contrarian.

Has Robles shown any evidence that he's more than just a very good defensive outfielder and an average hitter?
