A thousand times yes. And all those damn Harper jersey sales!
how much of jersey sales goes to the player, the team, the MLBPA, and other league-wide splits?

Nil to the player. If the merchandise is bought at a team owned location, then the team gets everything except revenue sharing money (34%). If it's bought on-line, the team gets 1/30 share minus MLB share.

All-Star apparel is treated the same as on-line. ****

**** this is according to the CBA that expired after the 2011 season. I can't torture myself anymore reading this carp. But since I haven't read of a change I'm assuming it's the same.

Fans nag because Harper isn't Trout. Owners nag because Trout isn't Harper.

That’s a really good way to put it.

One thing that can't be ignored is that Harper brings in revenue.    It's a tough guess, but I think he is responsible for somewhere around 5%-10% of ticket sales and 5%-10% of TV viewers.  Deserved or not, he is one of the top 3-5 stars of the game.   Are the Lerner's willing to bump up to the luxury tax threshold if they take a 20 million dollar hit in revenue by losing Harper?  At least half of Harper's contract pays for itself, I would guess.

$20 million is a big estimate- they make zero incremental dollar for tv viewers

Trout would get a ton more endorsements if he were in the east coast

He’s in LA. Quite the media market. He just doesn’t have Harper’s personality or marketing savvy.

so the "he sells a lot of shirts" comment is really 2/3 his annual shirt sales at Nats Park.  That's the one place you'd expect sales of the non-headliners to be a significant portion of the sales.  It's the modells that stock only 4 players where his sales would be big.  I can't imagine he sells that much in park merchandise annually.  7 years here, most of the sales have happened. Soto / Robles  OTOH, or a Keuchel as a FA, those will be new names and new sales.

So it's magic underwear vs outerwear.

Soto>Harper.  Seriously.

So maybe LA isn’t so great a media market for baseball players?

Too bad Harper can’t hit like Trout. With all that “personality” he could get the money he wants.

It's good to know you feel sympathy for Harper but I think he and his family will be able to get by on the $25-30M per year he will get.

Seriously, it doesn't matter what Harper wants or what people think he wants. The only thing that matters is the market. And the market will fairly decide his value. If the Nats want to match the market value or come close to it, then fine. If not, that's fine too. It's not much more complicated than that.

I don't understand the point you're trying to make. Maybe I need more coffee.

Trout is going to set the record for a deal, regardless of an extension or a FA signing. Harper is a good player, Trout is one of the greatest to ever play the game. Honestly, the best thing for baseball as a whole is watching Trout play for a big market, competitive team. Trout on the Phillies, Yankees, Cubs, or Red Sox would absolutely crank MLB ratings.

Probably true.  But not more marketable in today's age. He would have been a perfect pitchman in the '50 with his wholesome, milquetoast appeal. But he's way too boring for today's marketplace.

Not the Phillies. Those craphole fans would tear him down.

Put him on the Yankees or Red Sox and he’d be the most marketable player in the game
