What is the league average bat for a catcher?

Dunno...but Realmuto seems to have finished 3rd in all of MLB last year: .278 / .332 / .451 / .783

Catchers hit .245/.315/.406 last year. Realmuto's .278/.332/.451 seems substantially better.

That sorts 350 plus PAs for catchers last year, or roughly around 100 games played, which is about normal for a starting catcher in MLB. It's sorted by wRC+ to look at batting only. Since the defense metric doesn't take into account catcher framing, the defense side of WAR for catchers to me has always been suspect. Realmuto gets a big boost in WAR thanks to that defensive stat. He does have 8 stolen bases though, and also tends to have really good stats as a runner. Still, catchers are pretty weak overall as a position, so if you are trading highly ranked prospects for a catcher, even one with 3 years of control, you better be sold on things the slash line can't explain.

So you have a young, cost controlled, good hitting, great defensive catcher, and you don't think that should cost a premium? There's literally one elite catcher in baseball

He's even more valuable when you account for his home/away splits. You're not getting that without giving up top tier talent

I'd call Realmuto damn close to being elite these days. I know I never like to see him in the batter's box or behind the plate against the Nats.

Mind facting here, but Realmuto always seemed to wear us out.  I seem to recall him getting some big hits against us.

I think you have to give them whoever they want except for Soto or Robles. The fact we haven't given them up should be telling on how we feel about keeping Bryce.

You can't give up your two best prospects (who happen to play in the OF) when you're about to lose your superstar OF.

worst case, Realmuto goes to Milwaukee, or maybe the NYM or Phillies if the Phillies get spending-happy.  There will be other catchers at the deadline if you really need one, and if you want one at the start of the year, why not see if you can sign Lucroy on a pillow contract?  Got a hunch Cervelli will be on the market, and I'm Ok with that as a consolation prize if Realmuto goes elsewhere.

don't waste the bullets now before you really know your needs for the playoffs.  I still think  finding the right #2-#3 type to succeed Gio is more of a long term need and will also be needed for the playoffs.  The Read thing bites, harms the depth, but I don't think you need more  than Wieters, Severino, Montero, and S. Kieboom for the first 2- 4 months.

I think it says more about what's been out there on the trade market.  It won't be easy to replace Harper's star power if he leaves, but there's no shortage of corner outfielders available for a quarter of what Harper is going to cost.  They don't have to hold these guys back as insurance against Harper leaving. They just think they can get a better return than Realmuto (which doesn't necessarily mean Realmuto wouldn't be a huge pick-up; only that there may be better ways to spend those prospects based on what the team needs).

I think it's foolish to pay a ton in prospects for Realmuto given the current state of the free agent market.

Per Zuck, Eaton will bat lead-off in 2018.  I'm assuming we'll see something like this:

1. Eaton
2. Rendon
3. Harper
4. Zimmerman
5. Murphy
6. Taylor
7. Turner
8. Wieters

Or, maybe flip Turner/Wieters to set up a better chance of a bunt advancing the runner if Turner gets on, and to keep the L/R/L/R pattern

I don't think anyone wants to pay a ton. Not clear why anyone would not want to give up Soto and a couple other lesser prospects. Realmuto is a proven MLB player. And a good one.

So apparently we're "interested" in Arrieta, which, to me, screams Boras saying, "Hey, other teams, remember, the Nats are my nag and I can make them sign a guy to a huge deal!! Get your best offers in!"

Yep.

Also, apparently Arrieta turned down a six year deal from the Cubs. Looks like Boras is panicking.

I can't see Turner hitting at the bottom of the lineup. A 1-2 punch of Eaton and Turner will be a nightmare for pitchers.

Turner will probably bat lead-off for at least April and possibly till June, depending on how long it takes Eaton to get his timing back. Remember, it’s been almost a year since Eaton has seen live pitching. There’s going to be a learning curve there. He’ll probably get pencilled in at the 8-spot for the early part of the season. He’s also probably not going to be too good at first. It takes a while to come back from a long absence. Zuckerman probably has the “eventual” plan for Eaton.

Agreed...there's no way in hell Turner bats anywhere but 1st or 2nd in this lineup...

I still want a non-Arrieta starting pitcher. Perhaps a one-year rental at the deadline would work better given the very real possibility that this is the last year of the window.
