"Stick around" is the key phrase - he was already here.  Lerners don't like paying a guy not to play.  I think Rizzo would have dumped him if he hadn't been prohibited to do so.  Montero isn't here, he's a known troublemaker, and I don't think Rizzo thought this through very carefully.

Maybe he was sending a message to Miami that "look, we have options here".

People hand-wringing over a freaking minor league contract means it's time for the season to start.

Yeah, we were sending a message to Boras  that "look, we have options here".  Except Boras got the last laugh.   Hope that doesn't happen this year.

It doesn't seem like any other contender is pressing to acquire a top-level catcher like Realmuto.  The Marlins aren't going to benefit keeping him hostage through their rebuild.  It's already came out that he'd like a trade.  He's not demanding it, but he's politely asked.

We've signed Montero, which just signals that we're moving on with Wieters/Montero/Severino.  The Marlins will continue to hold out for Robles/Soto, but I don't think we blink.  Around the start of camp, they will finally give in and take a prospect package of the "best of the rest."  I think Realmuto is our starting catcher on Opening Day in Cincy.  I think Wieters becomes a highly-priced backup, but we won't give Realmuto a crazy workload since we can afford to rest him.  There's no urgency to have him carry us to the NL East title, and Wieters is paid well and capable of going out there to take some of the burden.  Montero is released and Severino is in AAA.

No kidding.  There's no such thing as a bad one.  They all are no-risk with whatever potential reward.

In this scenario Wieters could actually be useful.  He was good at the beginning of the season (2017) and wore out. Keep him rested and maybe he can be productive late into the season even into the postseason.

It felt like Wieters turned into a pumpkin about 5 seconds after walking off the Blos. Like he never got over it or something.

If you hadn't noticed, Wieters had hardly resembled his old self for at least several seasons up north! I know he had some injuries but ... major decline was evident with the O's.

If we give up what the Marlins want for The Real Muto, what on earth are you going to package in a deal for Trout?

He looks a bit like Edgar from MIB. Maybe he needs more sugar.

I agree.  If we don’t have a #5 who can go through the lineup twice and eat up innings, the result will be using up the bullpen long relief arms and putting more pressure on #1-4 to go deep into games.  By the end of the season, #1-4 will be worn out/more injury prone and less effective in the playoffs.

How about picking up R.A. Dickey?

This sounds about as likely as Royce signing a ‘home town discount’ deal.

Arrieta would be ridiculous. No way.

I think Lance Lynn is exactly what we need, and money-wise it can work.

I can't see the Lerner's giving Rizzo an extra dime to play with in payroll unless either a no brainer trade is on the table (Realmuto for chump change, say) or some help at the trade deadline.

Bad money? We've got a bit, but absolutely none we can realistically shift.

Seems like Rizzo is content to go into the season with what we’ve got and make deals as needed later on.

I've thought about Dickey and Lackey as options to give us some reliable innings.
