I would expect them to just accept being stuck with his contract for this year rather than put him in a package with something of value in order to move him.  They seem to accept going over the tax threshold this year given how much is off the books next year.

Exactly.  I'd rather Wieters just become a highly-paid backup than have to give away players of value to a team just to take his contract off our hands.  Wieters could prove pretty productive in a limited role, and with us likely to coast to a NL East title, we can afford to let him spell Realmuto fairly often.  Keep Realmuto fresh for the postseason.

The Davy effect...

...or was it the Boras effect to keep Wieters relevant...

WTOP notes we stole 7 bases off him in a game last year, he blamed Arietta and got himself immediately traded to Toronto.

Why don't we just bite the bullet and bring Ramos back for a year.

Well, Ramos isn't a free agent as he's under contract in Tampa.  He also isn't physically capable of catching regularly and staying healthy.  He could be like Gattis and be a decent DH bat that catches from time to time.

he caught 57 games after returning from the DL last year, and he put up good numbers as the season went on.  He'd be a good compliment to Wieters if we can't get Realmuto, and would likely come pretty cheap.

Montero is another Martinez guy, it is like he is just bringing some of his friends in like every manager does.

At this point I'd rather roll the dice wit Wieters and Severino (or Montero, maybe) and see what happens. Our farm system generally is full of turds or guys who are years from contributing, so I'd rather hold on to those that we have for bigger needs that may arise in the season. After this year our roster is going to likely be totally different (Harper & Murphy leaving changes a lot, obviously), so let's see what happens.

Realmoto is good but the price just seems too high right now when there's a non-zero chance Wieters stumbles into a 90 OPS+ season. If we can get Realmoto without moving Soto &/or Robles, go for it, but that doesn't seem likely. A package including/headlined by Kieboom and Fedde would be ideal for me, or if they like MAT or Goodwin, sweet, too.

Boo. How is Trea supposed to steal 8 bases off him in one game now?

The Rays signed him last year knowing they would get little out of him in 2017.  Why, now that he's as healthy as he's going to be, would they suddenly get rid of him "for cheap?"  Use some logic man.

Can they do an intra-squad scrimmage at Nats park just to see if he can get 10?

When you're talking about minor league free agent types, very often they have some history with the coaches and/or front office.  There are a bunch of those guys out there, so typically when you're picking a few out of the giant bargain bin you pick one with familarity.

I would think that's all the more reason not to take him.

Just our luck. Couldn't Martinez have "liked" a better bunch of failures? The kind that actually have some chance of contributing.

I'm no fan of Montero, but really he's just insurance/depth. Wieters' health is always a roll of the dice, Sevvy is a question mark, Read is a question mark, and really nobody else is ready after those two. So if Wieters goes for a DL trip and neither Severino or Read are doing all that good, or either one comes down with anything worse than the sniffles, they're going to need someone to fill in.  I genuinely don't see Montero spending more than a couple weeks with the big club, if that, and if he's cheap and makes Davey Martinez feel like he's in familiar waters, so be it.

It's fine, just with runners on, the entire pitching staff need to be throwing 100+ up in the zone to give Fakemuto's noodle arm the chance to get it out to 2nd the same game as the runner does.

Is the insurance/depth worth the baggage? Apparently he was so much of a problem in Chicago that Maddon had to kick him off the team.
