So the Buccos  traded Cole. Frankly, I think the Nats could have matched/beat that offer pretty easily

Zuck says a Nats equivalent package would have been Ross, Goodwin, Enny Romero, and Stevenson.

Maybe the Buccos wanted him out of the NL?  I am sure several teams would have bid on him. Surprised the Yankees didn't get him.

You don't know how the Pirates evaluate the players they got.  They had supposedly been asking for Gleyber Torres from the NYY.  That's like asking for Robles from us.  They must see something more in the prospects they are getting than Zuck is saying.

Cole would have been a hell of an addition to the pitching staff and I would have definitely traded for him if the package didn't include Robles. Oh well. Still lots of time for Rizzo to get another vet SP.

Giants were desperate for OF help.  Will be interesting to see the haul.

The Giants farm system ain’t exactly brimming with talent so I think the big piece is salary relief. Which sucks for the Pirates fans. I hope if they’ve gone this far, they’ll commit to a full rebuild. They could get a nice return for Rivero (man I wish we still had that guy), Marte, or a couple other guys.

Agree with the "salary relief".    It's been a big part of the scene there since at least the early 90s (Bonds/Bonilla) and certainly through the McClatchy years.

Phillips on MLB radio said this trade and the Josh Harrison trade would happen quickly because of the luxury tax and the big name FA still out there the Bucs dont have alot of time left to unload those 2.contracts. He said today or tomorrow on the McCutchen trade and said dont be surprised if you see Harrison shipped to the Blue Jays

Ryan Sullivan at NatsGM wonders if we could make a play for Cervelli now.

Cervelli makes as much as Wieters and is signed for next year too.  He'll be 32 on opening day.  Pedro Severino is 7.5 years younger.  I'd kind of rather give him a shot going forward.  I'm not sure I'm comfortable giving Pedro  300 PAs at this point, but I think we can use this year to figure our what we have with him and hope he's a fast, solid D catcher who is  growing into his offense.  Sort of like Cervelli did.

Rosenthal:

Quote
Sources: #Pirates signing LH closer Felipe Rivero to four-year contract with two club options. Guarantee believed to be about $22M, with each club option $10M. Deal will cover all four arb years and potentially two FA years. Not clear if an agency was involved in negotiations.

That’s a very Team-friendly contract and Rivero has been just incredible in his tenure with the Pirates, so you kind of have to expect he’s going to at least be shopped around to see what kind of haul he could bring back. Shortly after the McCutchen news broke, Rivero tweeted the face palm emoji so I’m gonna guess he’s not thrilled about all these trades when he’s just signed a multi year contract.

Last gasp of an era of excellence in SF. I don’t think Cutch and Longo will be enough to turn them around though.

Rosenthal: Curtis Granderson has a 1-year, $5m deal with the blue  jays.

There’s not enough FA pitchers to save the Giants and they don’t have the farm system to support all the trades they’d need.

what they really need to do at this point is trade Posey and rebuild, but they aren't going to do that.

Could you imagine the haul they’d get for 2 years of Bumgarner at $12m/year

They won’t do it; they’re too dead-set on one more shot, but they have so many weaknesses that the best they can hope for in 2018-2019 is to play spoiler to the Dodgers and maybe annoy the Rockies and Snakes.

I sure would love some Rizzo magic... bye bye Victor Robles...it was fun knowing ya...

fangraphs projects them at 85 wins.  They are likely to pick up another OF (Cain maybe?), so they are still a competitive team in 2018.  But their window is probably closed after that for a while.

I think FanGraphs is over-valuing the Giants roster, especially if the DBacks succeed in retaining Martinez. Even if Melancon comes back at his 2016 form, their bullpen is a big weakness.  I don’t expect them to repeat their 11-8 season against the Dodgers with their current roster, or even with a plus-offensive OF added, and overall the NL West is going to be tough again.

so, that line up has Pence, Crawford, Posey, Belt, Panik, Longo, and now Cutch?  I could see that making a run at the Dodgers.  It's oldish, and old line ups don't deserve the benefit of the doubt on health, but it has upside if they do stay healthy.
