That puts us well over the salary cap, doesn't it?

Personally, I'd rather see what Robles can do than bring in Yelich now...

Face it...we are stuck with Wieters for another year...Kelley too...so that's what, $15MM wasted dollars?

Trade Robles / Soto for Yelich / Realmuto

Then flip Harper to TB for Chris Archer.

Then order my World Series T-shirt

Why do you think it is realistic that any team can get both Yelich and Realmuto at the same time? Those are two very valuable guys who will cost a lot in prospects individually and who aren't getting paid enough to financially strain even a super cheap team like Miami. Getting them both probably requires giving up even more than would be needed to acquire a controllable ace pitcher.

I think Soto and Robles would net both Yelich and Realmuto. To VaRK's point, somehow the Nats would have to get someone to take Wieters's contract and probably Kelley as well. I think for those two top prospects and Wieters, the Marlins would make that deal.

The Marlins are no longer under financial pressures, so the fire sale is over. Their next big challenge is restocking the farm and that is going to be a tall order because that farm is a hot mess.  The package we sent to the ChiSox for Eaton would not buy us either Realmuto or Yelich.  Even though Robles and Soto are probably studs, it will take more than two potential studs to bring back two known, cost-controlled studs.  I would think a package of Soto, Crowe and Johnson gets us one of those Marlins.

I agree.  They were stuck with Stanton and his no-trade.  They had no leverage and got whatever they could get in a salary dump.  No need to do that with less than market price proven veterans...

PS Kelley will be on the opening day roster. He's a major candidate to bounce back, and he'll be given every opportunity to do just that. If not, he'll be DFA'd or permanently DL'ed at the trade deadline.  Personally I'd be thrilled if Kelley can regain his earlier form. We have an over-abundance of lefties in the pen and a shortage of righties; a healthy Kelley helps balance that out (and probably send Enny somewhere in a trade, which would make me sad, but he's more marketable than Solis... watch him go to the Pirates and end up being Felipe Rivero 2.0...)

Unless there are several injuries, orTaylor falls off cliff, we won't see Robles until September

Or imagine, Yelich, Robles, and Eaton to go with Rendon, Machado, Turner, Zimmerman, and Realmuto

Soto, Seth Romero, Raudy Reed, Brain Goodwin and Koda Glover for Yelich and Realmuto.  If Miami says no, try for just Realmuto.  If they say yes, the Nats have the most potent lineup in the NL.  If Harper re-signs, flip Taylor for a number 4 or 5 starter.  If Harper walks, move Eaton to right, Robles and Taylor cover center and 4th OF.  Use some of the money earmarked for Harper to get Andrew Miller and Craig Kimbrel.  Add those two to the bullpen and then who cares if Ross, Fedde and/or Cole are not super effective 4th and 5th starters.

Who?
Tiny Tim.  Smallish lefty reliever who has had a history of arm trouble.  I think multiple UCL surgeries.  Out of the KC organization.  When he was good, he was double digit K/9 with an acceptable BB rate, but he has struggled since his last surgery. Took 2 years off and pitched in the minors for the Nats last year. Still had a high K rate, but his BB rate was even higher.  After the layoff and the first season back, maybe there's a chance he gets back to an acceptable BB rate.

Pass.
more or less, I want them to trade for a #3 starter and not sign one.  The contracts FA starters get generally are too long.  Visions of JZ pop into my head.  Even Jon Lester is overpaid at this point.  Scherzer might be the most reasonable one recently.  I would rather dumpster dive at this point (I'll put CC's contract this year as closer to a dumpster dive, even though it is for $10MM; I think there's mutual happiness with keeping him around and getting to stay).

Given what Alex Cobb just turned down, I agree.

See, I think they need to aim for a number 2 type starter, with the idea being that Max will start to fall off in a year or two.

Quote
Giolito finished 2017 on an outstanding note, firing seven innings of one-run ball Sunday versus the Royals. The talented 23-year-old right-hander posted a promising 2.38 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and 34/12 K/BB ratio over his first 45 1/3 innings (seven starts) with the White Sox and he'll be a high-upside fantasy option for 2018.

He would have been nice as a 4th/5th starter

He stunk here.  Apparently someone in Chicago fixed something.  I doubt it would have been fixed here.

Maybe. It took him allllll year to get close to right last year. Sometimes 22-23 year old kids need a little time to figure things out. Not like he would have saved Dusty or Maddux's jobs, so the new staff might have been able to get to him.

Ubaldo Jimenez was once the best pitcher on the planet for three months. If he can consistently do it for a full season, then I would say Giolito looks good as a number 3. Right now he could look as good as Zimmermann did when he was on or as bad as Jackson did when he was off.

Gerrit Cole traded to Houston.  I guess Pittsburgh is heading into a rebuilding mode now.
