I'm not sure how much better Yelich makes us. Realmuto makes us a lot better.

Yelich  gives you a long term solution in LF, at a minimum. With Eaton in RF, we could afford to hang on to Taylor.

Imagine Realmuto instead of Weiters and Yelich instead of Taylor.  That lineup is electric.

And Imagine Robles instead of Taylor at CF in a year if we can hang onto him.

An outfield of Yelich - Robles - Eaton would be the best in the league by far.

Or Yelich, Robles and Harper.

Or imagine, Yelich, Robles, and Eaton to go with Rendon, Machado, Turner, Zimmerman, and Realmuto

Would Machado play second? Or would you move Turner there?

This. Of those three, Turner is the weakest defender. Move him to second, put Machado at short, and sign Rendon to a long term extension.

I don't have to imagine.  I've seen the KC Royals in 2014 and 2015.

I think it’s still a high possibility that Harper is in RF in 2019 for the Nationals. Eaton in LF. Curious who is in CF.

Zuck writes this morning that the Nats aren't likely to part with either Soto or Robles for Realmuto.  I'd think if there's an option to get Realmuto for Soto, Rizzo would jump all over that.

I bet the Marlins are asking for too much. They don’t want to be seen as giving away the farm for nothing after the PR hit they took for the Stanton trade. Plus, the Yankees don’t need a catcher 😉.  I agree, though,. I’d give up Soto for Realmuto, but not Robles.

That begs the question. Now that we have seen what Robles can do, what would you give him up for, reasonably? Or is he pretty much untouchable?

He seems untouchable. Honestly Robles fits in any scenario, even in a worst case Harper leaves scenario. I just read that Miami isn’t looking to attach other high salaries to make a trade package. They want prospects.

which is nice, but it's not remotely in his ability to control what position he plays

well, he gets to pick which team he signs with, so he has some control.

not for another year. And the story line seems to be he wants to play SS to increase his value, once he's signed, I doubt he cares

hotshot - what would it take to get Realmuto if it did not involve a prospect named Robles or Soto?  one of [Fedde / S Romero / Crowe], Read, C Kieboom?  Maybe Garcia or the other Dominican MI in the GCL instead of one of those pieces?

Good question. Here are the Fangraphs top trade values from this past summer with their max contracts (some guys have options I'm assuming get picked up). I'm stopping before Trea Turner at #7 because I think you obviously trade Robles for any guy at Trea or above.

I'm stopping here because I think I'd probably say no straight up to anyone below Freddie Freeman besides maybe Willson Contreras, given our current long-term need at C.

20. Michael Conforto (4 pre-arb/arb years)
19. Willson Contreras (5 pre-arb/arb years)
18. George Springer (3 arb years)
17. Buster Posey (4/$85.6 million)
16. Chris Archer (4/$33.8 million)
15. Jose Ramirez (5/$32.4 million)
14. Freddie Freeman (4/$86 million)
13. Carlos Martinez (5/$63.5 million)
12. Gary Sanchez (5 pre-arb/arb years)
11. Cody Bellinger (5 pre-arb/arb years)
10. Corey Kluber (4/$51 million)
9. Mookie Betts (3 arb years)
8. Anthony Rizzo (4/$52 million)

In the comments there, many fans don't want to trade Robles or Soto. I understand not wanting to do that, but if the Nats get back Yelich AND Realmuto, that deal makes so much sense. Yelich is controlled until 2021 for pennies, same with Eaton. Robles might have a higher ceiling than Yelich, but by how much? Is Robles going to be a 4.5 fWAR player each year? Could he bust? Same goes for Soto. They are very good prospects to be sure, but Yelich has proved what his value add is. Having Yelich, Eaton, and Taylor in the OF makes the pain of losing Harper much less, AND it nets the Nats a controlled all-star hitting catcher.

I think a move like this will likely make the years after 2021 really rough, but keeps the window open with the current long term guys.

If it weren't the Marlins, I'd say it would take Robles or Soto plus a couple of the rest you mention. Then again, since it's the Marlins, Rizzo maybe could "steal" Realmuto. I admit to probably overvaluing JT because I really like his skills. To the degree I think he could be the piece to finally put the Nats over the top.

That puts us well over the salary cap, doesn't it?

Personally, I'd rather see what Robles can do than bring in Yelich now...

Face it...we are stuck with Wieters for another year...Kelley too...so that's what, $15MM wasted dollars?

Why do you think it is realistic that any team can get both Yelich and Realmuto at the same time? Those are two very valuable guys who will cost a lot in prospects individually and who aren't getting paid enough to financially strain even a super cheap team like Miami. Getting them both probably requires giving up even more than would be needed to acquire a controllable ace pitcher.
