I assume the discussion was spurred by yesterday's Post article on the rise of Difo (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/nationals-journal/wp/2017/12/27/next-season-could-be-wilmer-difos-audition-to-be-nationals-future-second-baseman/).  He isn't going anywhere.  He'll likely be starting at 2B at season's open, and could very well be our regular 2B in 2019 and beyond assuming we don't resign Murphy.

I think there is a package to deal for Realmuto, which would make good sense since he is controlled until 2020 and projects to be at least a league average bat with good defense, but awful framing skills, worse than Wieters bad. From BRef, it seems that LF is only slightly worse as a whole than C across the board.

It seems that the new luxury tax system under the new CBA is going to constrain us (and others) from going over the cap.  That means we aren't going to be able to take on Realmuto's salary, and I can't imagine anyone would take on Wieter's unless we pay for it in prospects.  That means a ridiculous overpay for Realmuto.

What I think Janes says is that, yes, they are going to be over this year, but probably not by a ludicrous amount, and then, with a ton coming off next year (in addition to Harper, Murphy, and Gio,  there's Wieters, Madson, Kelley, and a few others), they could re-sign Harper and still have maybe $40MM of cap room.  Realmuto would not change that.

I wonder if Difo for Realmuto would work?  They need IF help, with no one established besides Castro (if they don't flip him).  Sanchez then becomes your back up unless you make a signing.  If you think Goodwin could be a 2d division starter, then you might have another piece to move.

my guess is that we end up going into the season with Wieters and Severino, and looking for help at the deadline if Wieters is again awful.

I'd think a Soto for Realmuto trade works for Miami.  I'd surely make the deal from Rizzo's chair.  Even if Harper leaves, I still think there's four OF's ahead of Soto on the depth chart (Eaton, Taylor, Robles, Goodwin).  Soto projects as a potential stud, but I think Realmuto is already at stud level, as catchers go.  Maybe the Nats winning window is still open in 2020, but's a big gamble to expect it to be as open then as it is now.  Maybe being down an outfielder provides a little extra impetus for emptying the Brinks truck at Bryce's door.

Not to mention that now that the Pads are the only major pro sports team left in San Diego, Hosmer would become the de facto biggest sports star on the city and if by some miracle they become good, he'll get a lot of the credit assuming his performance holds up.

I agree, i think he should take it. The only concern for the Pads is Will Myers moving back to the outfield is that he has not played a healthy season not at 1b.

I think you are right, and I'm the one who said it (although I thought perhaps with some other value).  I think Difo is a starter for them, but Realmuto gets more than that, 100%.
