Greinke is owed 34 million in 2018, 34.5 in 2019, 35 in 2020, 35 in 2021, and 62.5 million defered from 2022-2026.  Taking on him and signing JD Martinez to that deal for their mid-30s would be cripling.

There is no evidence that Greinke is slowing down. I fully expect him to be an ace for the remainder of his contract.

JD has never been injured and is aging well. I doubt he loses his power. He would also be the long term option at 1B when Zimm leaves and will be 35 at the end of his deal.

That's insane money annually for Greinke.  That's barely less than what Harper is projected to get annually, which is who you are so adament would be a terrible signing and he's 25.

Also, why do you slot Scherzer behind Strasburg?

Could the Nats swap Wieters and Soto for Realmuto and Ziegler? That would basically have the Nats take on more money, and the Fish could get out from under Ziegler's 9 Million and whatever they would pay Realmuto for Wieters's 10.5 Million.

That would shore up the pen a bit more, fix catcher for the next few seasons, and since they are probably already over the tax threshold this year, they could still go out and sign a starter. I won't believe that the Nats aren't in on Arrieta until he signs with a different team.

I suppose they could, but I don't like it for the Nats. I'd rather keep Soto.

we have no room in our bullpen for anyone else right now.  Everyone is either under a guaranteed contract or out of options.  So we'd have to deal a reliever (say Grace?) to make room for Ziegler.

Realmuto is in his first arbitration year. They won't save much money. Ziegler, if hes still good, will be valuable at the deadline.

Wieters has no value.

I think I am also under stating Realmuto's market. It would probably take Soto, Kieboom, and a pitcher. Still, Realmuto helps now and tomorrow, and Ziegler is still serviceable, but overpaid if you assume 8 Million a win, and he was only worth 0.5 fWAR even with a 4.79 ERA since he is REALLY GOOD at suppressing homers. Would be good in the 6th inning or mop up duty, even at 9 Million for 2018.

I don't know why the Marlins would be interested in Wieters in a return, unless we're basically going to pay almost all of his salary.  In that case, why do that if you're the Nats?  Just keep him as a backup unless somehow another team is interested in him.  I would love to acquire Realmuto somehow, but trades within the same division are rare.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Nationals have inquired on both Greg Holland and Wade Davis.

The Nationals had already been connected to Davis and now they've been mentioned as a potential landing spot for both of the top free agent closers. Heyman notes that Washington "tried to get Holland last year," with one source saying general manager Mike Rizzo "badly wanted to sign him to solve their closing issue." It's pretty clear that, as well as Sean Doolittle pitched for the Nats last season, the club is looking to enhance their ninth inning situation.

Could you imagine if we got Holland?

Greg Holland
Sean Doolittle
Brandon Kintzler
Ryan Madsen
Sammy Solis
Enny Romero
Shawn Kelly - 2016 version

Wow.

Work on a 3 team trade for JT Realmuto.

To Nats- Chris Archer, JT Realmuto
To TB- Christian Yelich, Erik Fedde, Matt Weiters
To Miami- Victor Robles, Juan Soto, AJ Cole, Wilson Ramos

Wade Davis is now a Rockie. Jeff Passen reporting, Chelsea Janes and others retweeting.

ETA: 3 years/ $52m. Highest ever AAV for a relief pitcher.

Robles and Soto alone are WAY too much to give up for Archer and Realmuto.   Scrap those two, give them Fedde, Cole, and Wieters; that's enough (and of course we'll have to pick up a good portion of Wieters salary).

That's a horrible deal for the Nats.  You are talking about giving up our #1 and #2 prospects, PLUS Cole and Fedde, for a #2-3 starter and a solid catcher.  Seems a bit lopsided.

From a TB perspective, its Archer on a very good contract and Ramos for Yelich, Fedde, and Wieters? They end up taking on salary ($18MM v. $14.75MM) to get Yelich.  In the abstract, moving a good starter for a very good regular on similar (but slightly more) contract makes is a move you do if money and stage of your competitiveness is not considered, but TB needs multiple prospects because they have a significant rebuild.  Add in that they probably want to reduce budget during the rebuild, this does not make sense for them.  They would be better off sending Archer here for Soto, Fedde, and maybe a catching prospect like Read.   From a Nats perspective, you are giving a consensus top 10 prospect, plus another that is further away but with drool-worthy power and a good overall hitting approach, plus a mid-rotation projection, just to dump Wieters for a mid-rotation starter under a good contract and a regular catcher.  That is a price you pay for keys to the kingdom - Chapman and Miller in 2016.  Neither Realmuto nor Archer are keys to the kingdom.  If I'm Miami, I do the deal in a heart beat.

Tyson Ross to the Padres on a minor league deal. Hopefully they will not destroy what’s left of his arm.

Yup. He’s had so many health issues but the Padres might not have had the best approach to health management during his first trip through.

Sup ya'll. How is the off-season going for us?

I haven't really been in a position to really follow the Nats like I used to for years. I missed all the playoff baseball, but I have been following them from afar as best I can.

Perhaps it is time for me to get back into it.

I've got to guess that the biggest push right now would be to acquire a better catcher and somehow move Wieters's money in some fashion. Sorting for catchers last season with at least 250 PA and wRC+ of over 100 shows the following available options (with slash line and wRC+ in parentheses):

Yasmani Grandal (.247/.308/.459 - 102) - Currently on trade block from Dodgers @ projected 7.7 Million in arbitration and controlled until end of 2018 season (MLBTR)
J.T. Realmuto - (.278/.332/.451 - 105) - Currently on trade block from Marlins @ projected 4.2 Million and controlled until end of 2020 season (MLBTR)
Alex Avila - (.264/.387/.447 - 124) - Currently a FA

You might add in the two Barves catchers as well:

Tyler Flowers - (.281/.378/.445 - 124) - Owed 4 Million in 2018 and a FA at end of season
Kurt Suzuki - (.283/.351/.536 - 129) - Owed 3.5 Million in 2018 abd a FA at end of season

Of those, both Suzuki and Flowers caught less than 90 games, and I wouldn't trust Suzuki's 2017 since he has had a pretty meh career up until last season. Flowers came into his own in Atlanta, and would make sense, but the issue with him is that he is only controlled until the end of the season. Same goes for Suzuki and Grandal.

Avila could make some sense, but has some major questions. He caught less than 80 games, has a HUGE strikeout problem, and basically was on fire from March through June, then collapsed entirely in July, had a decent August, than proceeded to fall fairly below average in September/October.

I think there is a package to deal for Realmuto, which would make good sense since he is controlled until 2020 and projects to be at least a league average bat with good defense, but awful framing skills, worse than Wieters bad. From BRef, it seems that LF is only slightly worse as a whole than C across the board.
