Per Rosenthal: Orioles closer Zach Britton has suffered a ruptured achilles while working out, will require surgery and is expected to be out for 4-6 months minimum.

Trade for him now! The lowest his value can get. He comes back, awesome. He doesn't, no big loss. Trade something marginal.

The Orioles would be much better off waiting for him to come back and show he's healthy this summer and then trade him prior to the deadline.

Longoria was traded to the Giants. Looks like their fire sale is on.

Chris Archer will look great in a Nats uniform next year.

Questionable "clubhouse presence" at best, especially when he doesn't get exactly what he wants.

Sounds like he'll fit right in.

With his contract and youth, he'd be worth "givng up the farm" to acquire.  Reminds me of the Gio trade when we got him...similar scenario.

Crazy ZDK trade idea:

Wieters, Taylor, Soto, Glover, and Kieboom for Ramos, Kiermaier, Archer, and Colome?

Nats Arms Race looks at where the roster stands today.

http://www.nationalsarmrace.com/?p=14632

He notes we're limited in moves because AJ Cole, Grace, Solis, Goodwin, and Romero are all out of options.  And we're still in need of a Chris Heisey / Howie Kendrick type who can play the OF and be a RH pinch hitter off the bench (presumably to replace Stevenson).

Current Roster:

SP: Scherzer, Strasburg, Roark, Gonzalez, Cole
RP: Doolittle, Madsen, Knitzler, Kelley, Grace, Solis, Romero.
C: Wieters, Severino
Inf: Zimmerman, Murphy, Rendon, Turner, Adams, Difo
OF: Eaton, Taylor, Harper, Goodwin, Stevenson

We did sign Ryan Raburn to a minor league deal with a ST invite. He could very well be our 5th OF. Stevenson is not ready

Taylor and Soto are barely enough to get Archer. In fact, probably not enough for the Rays. They'll probably want a starter. Asking them to take Wieters would need more prospects.

And I highly doubt Wilson Ramos can handle catching duties regularly anymore

I expect there will be a trade or bargain bin signing for the fifth starter. AJ Cole probably gone unless they think Grace or Solis will clear waivers.

Replace Stevenson with a right handed pinch hitter and I am happy with that lineup and bench.

David Schoenfield on ESPN.com said getting Archer would likely mean giving up Robles. Don't know if Rizzo would do this.

Right now Cole / Fedde / Milone for the 5th starter slot.  But there's nowhere for Cole to go if he doesn't get that spot.  The bullpen is full.

I wouldn't. I like Archer. I think that given a good environment he could actually achieve his ceiling. Hanging out with guys like Strasburg and Scherzer, who have really mastered that change up, would help him. But based on what I saw last season from Robles, I'm not giving him up for Archer.

I doubt Milone makes it out of ST as a starter. He just doesn't have enough movement on his pitches at this point. Maybe he can become a lefty reliever.

Fedde has options and should go back down to the minors. He threw 105 innings last year. He's gonna need another year with a cap of around 140-150 before he can go a whole season and he probably needs a little more grooming.

So Cole will basically start with it, unless the Nats find someone else between now and then.

I will be disappointed if Cole is our 5th starter to start the season. I would be surprised if Rizzo doesn't get a FA and/or a trade. Maybe someone like Duffy via trade or Cobb as a FA.

No chance Rizzo goes into the year with Gio as the #3 or Cole as the #5.

I think Rizzo still has a hard on for Greinke.

Arizona has Robbie Ray, Shelby Miller, Taijuan Walker and Patrick Corbin in their rotation and will be looking to replace JD in the outfield.

Zach Greinke for Michael Taylor, AJ Cole, Eric Fedde and Juan Soto.

We sign JD Martinez 5 years, 175 million
We still have Robles to take over for Harper in a year.

1- SS  Turner
2- RF Harper
3- LF Martinez
4- 1B Zimmerman
5- 2B Murphy
6- 3B Rendon
7- CF Eaton
8- C Weiters

Bench- Adams, Difo, Goodwin, Severino

1- Stephen Strasburg
2- Max Scherzer
3- Zach Greinke
4- Gio Gonzalez
5- Tanner Roark

Closer- Sean Doolittle
Setup- Brandon Kintzler
Setup- Ryan Madsen
Enny Romero
Sammy Solis
Koda Glover (If he is healthy)
Shawn Kelly (See above)
Matt Grace

Hello Championship.

Greinke is owed 34 million in 2018, 34.5 in 2019, 35 in 2020, 35 in 2021, and 62.5 million defered from 2022-2026.  Taking on him and signing JD Martinez to that deal for their mid-30s would be cripling.
