Posted this in the Division Watching too.

Holy salary dumping, Batman! Ken Rosenthal tweets:

‪ ‬Just announced: #Dodgers get Matt Kemp from #Braves for Adrian Gonzalez, Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy, Charlie Culberson and cash.

Jeez. Massive salary dump by the Dodgers. Also clearing out space where they need it. They're now slater to be under the luxury tax threshold

Why is Atlanta doing this? They can't possibly think Gonzo is gonna have a good year and then trade him

To get McCarthy and Kazmir, I guess.  More guys to flip mid-season if they don't contend?

To get out of Kemp’s contract.  they’ll probably release AGon.

Early reports say Barves already released A-Gon.

Why is Atlanta doing this?

Why is LA doing this?  Why would they want that piece of trash back?

They are dumping Kemp. It's all about getting under the luxury tax threshold.

Not following.  The Dodgers acquired Kemp. Right?

Right. They'll pay more over the next few seasons, but they will pay less than they would have with Gonzalez and Kazmire this season. Which means, when all the nice free agents hit the market, the luxury tax threshold will have reset.

And the Dodgers will end up either flipping Kemp to the AL or will release him altogether.

Pirates wanted Torres from the Yankees for Cole. Yankees said no. Frazier would likely be part of a deal.

I feel like the Nats could match or beat any deal the Yankees offer that doesn't involve Torres. And if we could put Gio in the deal somehow, the Bucs would probably be able to fix his control and flip him again.

Release him? They've taken on his contract.  Release him and eat the $21+M?  Doesn't make sense.

That’s what’s expected. It’s all about being able to spend next year

it makes sense given they are just trying to reduce payroll to come under the luxury tax.  Kemp is what, a .4 WAR player right now?  It's arguably better to pay him to not play than to have him on the roster.

Yep, because it resets their penalty clock so in 2019 when they go over by a mile, they only pay 30% tax (or whatever it is) and not 55%. That $21m will pay for itself.

his beard got awful white.  I know he's old and probably worried about his future, but he looks like he really put on weight.

Some baseball discussion about Rendon and Kintzler. I still think Anthony will test the market. Does anyone believe Kintzler had offers to close?  Doesn't matter now and if it helps him to feel good about himself so be it.

I was hoping to add another big bat (even if it means MAT starts as the 4th OF or is traded) but I don't think that's going to happen at this point. Or a #3 starter.

I was hoping for a starting pitcher. I think the lineup will be ok with Eaton back. And expect progress from Trea.

According to Craig Mish of Sirius XM, J.T. Realmuto has requested a trade from the Marlins.

The Marlins have already sold off a number of high-profile pieces and Realmuto would presumably prefer to go to a place where he has a better chance to win. Requesting a trade doesn't mean it will happen, but it could be the best outcome for both parties. Realmuto turns 27 in March and is under team control for three more seasons, so he could bring back an impressive haul. As opposed to some of the other deals, a trade involving Realmuto would be about bringing back top prospects rather than shedding salary. Realmuto batted .278/.332/.451 with 17 homers, 65 RBI, and eight steals over 141 games this past season.

But who takes Wieters?

To Miami:
Wieters
Soto
Severino
Dan Johnson
$10 million

That still leaves us with Read to play backup, and Spencer Kieboom in the system.

Don't see the Nats paying 10 million and getting close/going over the luxury tax

I'm trying to watch Chris Russo on MLB. How does anyone watch that guy? They could just get a random guy on the NYC subway and he would sound better.
