If Stanton goes to the Dodgers I am convinced that Harper ends up there as well.
The Marlins are apparently being really unrealistic with their expectations in regards to the return they are seeking for Stanton. They apparently don't want to eat a lot of money. Which makes sense if you're trying to do a salary dump. But that contract doesn't have a team out for quite a while, which means that whoever gets it is going to eat close to 300 million. So I don't think anyone would give up a ton for that. Especially considering the Dodgers outfield is now chalk full of talent and they really need to add some starting pitching.

Now, if the Dodgers can get him for some mid-level prospects, then yes, I could see them doing it and eating the salary. They could then flip a couple of their top tier prospects for a starting pitcher.

I'm still holding out for Colorado. I want to see a 600 foot bomb

And we're a Robles hot start in Syracuse away from having a massive logjam.

Didn't exactly light up the AFL. He needs to stay in AAA until after the ASB.

Dodgers are getting pretty deep into the luxury tax threshold as it is.  Adding Stanton and Harper would mean they'd be paying 110 million per year on 2 outfielders.  I wonder how secure they feel that they'll be able to continue to collect their 300 million dollars/year on a tv deal that doesn't show their games to anyone.

probably pretty secure unless time warner goes bankrupt- not the dodger's fault a cable company agreed to a terrible deal

You're probably right.  I always thought TW would find some way to get out of that deal since 8 billion dollars is a lot of money to eat, but maybe not.

It's a crazy situation though.  Time Warner is essentially paying the Dodger's payroll and getting nothing in return.

The AFL season isn't over.  His average is only .263, but his OPS is .914 and he has a .388 OBP and 3 homers in 38 at bats, plus 7/7 on SBs in 12 games.   That's pretty darn good, especially for a 20-year-old.   He should get some AAA time for several reasons, but those are substantially better AFL numbers than I was expecting.  Anyone who runs like he does and has a high-.300s OBP is pretty much valuable for that alone.

Update: am now hearing Matt Wieters exercising 2018 option is not at all a done deal. Nothing official either way, no decision made.

Apparently everyone should go out and get Stanton.

Had my question answered on the latest MLBTR chat today. Asked as "Rizzo" about a #3 starter.

I like the Straily idea.  He wouldn't take a ridiculous amount.  Ideally i'd like to package him with another player to aid the marlins payroll cut and also consolidate offseason acquisitions

What was the answer?

NatsGM argues today that the Nats should sign Steven Vogt to platoon with Wieters.

Vogt is an excellent target.

Yay, 13+ million for a catcher to OPS under .700 and not throw out base runners. In fact, all his defensive metrics are worse than Wieters.

Pass. I'd rather roll with Severino as the platoon.

Said we will make a big splash but don't know if a #3 starter will be it. Could be that or a C or OF.

Actually, I'm thinking of him as more of a Lind replacement. PH, 1B, OF, and only then a 3d catcher, allowing you to pinch run Severino or defensively swap out Wieters.

Can we just sign Lind as a Lind replacement?

What a dumb move to sign Stanton to that deal to begin with.  You sign him to that deal, he is coming off a MVP season, and nobody wants to take on that contract without the Marlins eating part of it.  Just what were their expectations for him if teams think it's too much even when he's MVP?  If he hit 80 HRs, would anybody take that contract on in full?  Geez.

Well, I think the Marlins realized they needed to overpay him to keep him in Miami, because he'd probably have preferred to go elsewhere.  The fact that no one is going out of their way to try to take a 290 million Stanton has got to be a signal to Harper that he is probably not going to get a contract even as high as Stanton's.

And now they don't want to keep him in Miami, so it didn't work out so well. Why don't these teams think this all through to begin with?

Because the marlins had a few stents where they wanted to be large market (remember when they brought in Reyes)

Loria somehow sold the team for 1.2 billion dollars, so I guess it all worked out for him.
