Without Harper there is a definite need for some left handed batting against righties.

Arguments for Difo over Turner, Lind over Zim and Goodwin over Taylor are all valid on such games. It's good to have that depth though can only see Dusty committing to one of those switches.

Zuck, in this morning's chat, says the Nats are going to need a defensive OF on the bench, and it will likely be one of Stevenson, Bautista, or Robles.  He also suspects they may keep Severino as a PR for Weiters late in games.

So assuming Harper and Werth are able to play, that would set the bench as: Lind, Kendrick, Difo, Lobaton, speedy OF and Severino.

Now that we've clinched, he should start most days. Need to know what we have before the post season

Zuck answered my question about the potential of Robles making the post-season roster:

Quote
They're certainly going to consider it. That's why Robles was called up last week, once the club realized Goodwin may not make it back in time. It's a lot to ask of a 20-year-old who was still at Single-A only a couple months ago. But in the admittedly limited time we've had a chance to see Robles in the big leagues, he has given us a glimpse of why the team is so intrigued by him.

Again, I think he makes the roster.  He's a better option, even at this point, than Stevenson or Bautista.

They need to approach Robles like he could start. I have serious doubts about Harper's readiness. They need to find out if Robles can hit at this level. Would be nice to catch lightening in a bottle for once with one of our rookies.

I started a post about how Robles is completely unproven at the MLB level, but I guess he's better than Stevenson and Bautista. If that's the standard, then he is surely in.

I guess start the kid every damn day til October to get him ready for such a role.

So Severino will do nothing but sit on the bench for the entire series.

Wasn't Andrew Jones on the Braves World Series team at age 19 or 20?

19.  There was another guy recently on the Nats who got called up at age 19 for a cup of coffee and made it to the post season roster.  Barry Harper or something like that. :)

What's the point in carrying both Lobaton and Severino? PR or not.

I mean, we have to carry a back up. Would you rather have Lobaton or Severino?

My postseason roster, rife with optimism:

SS - Turner
2B - Murphy
3B - Rendon
RF - Harper
1B - Zimmerman
LF - Werth
C - Weiters
CF - Taylor

Bench:
Lind
Kendrick
Difo
Severino
Robles
Lobaton

SP:
Max
Stras
Gio
Roark

RP:
Doolittle
Madsen
Kintzler
Albers
Perez
Romero
Jackson

Wish it was Goodwin or Eaton over a catcher, but even optimism isn't making that happen.

If Lobaton doesn't recover from the HBP from last nite I'm all in for Severino as the back up. I want to go with 8 RP's.

Using Chili's roster, swap Blanton for Lobaton and that's my guess.

NO chance we carry 3 catchers.

Also I think Solis makes this roster.

Didn't Zuck bring up that possibility?

I don't like it but I can see it happening.

The only way we carry three catchers is if Dusty and/or Rizzo don't have the nerve to tell Lobaton that he won't be included.  With Weiters and Severino, Lobaton adds nothing.

I'd prefer Severino over Lobaton as well. I mean who wouldn't? He can PR for Weiters late in games. Lobby doesn't really serve much value, which sucks to say because he seems like a genuinely good guy and I'm sure is beloved in the clubhouse.

I am curious how many relievers we bring and who gets brought besides the obvious big 3 and lefty specialists.

All the more important because we won't have Edwin Jackson to pinch run for Weiters.

Totally agree on Lobaton.  Kind of a waste of a spot, but I don't feel good saying it.  I put him on my roster guess, but I think I'd prefer Solis...maybe Blanton.  Although Blanton doesn't make me feel good, either.

Also, I think you have to say "obvious big 4" and include Albers.  He's earned it.

just a bit of defense for Lobi - a lot of the starters are used to throwing to him  and like him.

edit - where's a good set of stats on W/L and era for catchers games started?  also how pitchers do with various catchers?  By rep, Wieters is a great game caller but I don't know about Lobi.   I don't want to lobby to much for jose without the data.

There just isn't any argument for carrying all three.  If they decide to carry Lobaton, then leave Severino off.
