Scherzer grew up and played high school baseball in the suburb west of St. Louis. He was drafted by the Cardinals out of high school, but opted to attend the University of Missouri. Arizona drafted him in the first round after college.

The MLB record for single-game strikeouts is 20, tied by Max Scherzer, Kerry wood and Roger Clemons.
