Follow the Prospects: Tyler Watson, LHP
« Topic Start: May 24, 2017, 01:29:24 PM »
I searched for a thread on Tyler, but didn't see one. I apologize if there already has been a thread on him.

Current Team: Hagerstown Suns
Size: 6'5" 200 lbs
Drafted: 2015 Draft - 34th round in out of Gilbert HS in Gilbert, AZ
Born: May 22, 1997
2015 Stats: Gulf Coast Nationals - 4 GS 13.1 IP 0 ER 16K 4 BB
2016 Stats: Auburn - 9 GS 43 IP 1.88 ERA 48K 9 BB
                  Hagerstown - 3 GS 15 IP 4.80 ERA 16K 6 BB
2017 Stats: Hagerstown - 9 GS 56 IP 3.42 ERA 55K 15 BB

[edit - prospect ratings in the Nats organization courtesy of RD - "He's ranked 17th by mlb.com and 14th by Sickels at minor leagueball"]

Committed to Loyola Marymount before being drafted in the 34th round out of HS. The Nationals gave him a 400k signing bonus to forego college.

After Fedde, I believe he is the best SP we have in our system at the moment. He has only given up 4 HR in his three years of pro ball. Career 135/34 K/BB ratio. He is still a few years away, but we should hope he gets 100+ IP this year in Hagerstown. If he keeps those control numbers, he will move up the system quickly.

He threw a gem today 6 IP 0 ER 5K 2H 1 BB which led me to post this. Definitely a guy to keep an eye on. I am going to try to get up to Hagerstown for his next home start.

could you add a date of birth and the year he was drafted (I think you just have a round).  Also, has any of the prospect raters (Sickels, Baseball America, etc...) ranked him in our organization?

Thanks for doing this.

He just turned 20 this week (5/22/97). 34th round in 2015.

Been keeping an eye on him just based on the obvious: given top 5 round money despite his actual round, and is a 6'5 200lb lefty. I remember reading he topped out in the low 90's coming out, but don't know where he's at now. With that frame, you have to hope for some more left in the tank.

He's ranked 17th by mlb.com and 14th by Sickels at minor leagueball.

Great info, thanks. The one thing I couldn't find was his pitch arsenal so that's good to know. Has anyone seen him in person? Like I said, I am going to try to go see him in Hagerstown and if I do, ill be sure to give a little amatuer scouting report.

That was before the season I believe. Seems like pretty standard fastball, curve, and change.

Up and down the last couple of outings.

Current numbers 4-2 12 GS 63 IP 67 SO 20 BB 3.29 ERA 1.159 WHIP

Would be great to see him get 100-120 IP and call it a year. Start next year in Potomac as a guy to really keep an eye on.

That 63ip is already a career high in professional ball, topping 58 from last year. From what I could find, he only pitched 54 innings as a high school senior, and 13 in rookie ball, so 67ip is a career high, period. So I doubt we see him push 120 this year, but who knows how much work he had before short season started last year. He just came off the temporary inactive list, not the DL, so I think they may have been trying to shut him down for a bit around the all star break to manage his innings. If he approaches 100ip, I'd be satisfied.

Great info. Maybe 100 IP is the ceiling this year

Why, of course he can close. He closes his locker before and after every game. And he's named after many Nats' pitchers: Tyler Grace, Tyler Cole, Tyler Jordan, Tyler Bosman, Tyler Pascual, Tyler Stone, Tyler Porterfield...

I was about to add Tyler Stobbs...well remembered for the longest homer in Griffith Stadium history. (Incidentally, Mickey Vernon and Roy Sievers are my all-time favorite baseball players.)
