Final AFL line for 2019.

That's pretty encouraging considering his age.  I'm not sure why the prospect ranking services dropped him down the rankings at the end of the year.  Well, I have two guesses, neither one of them particularly flattering to the baseball prospect press.   His numbers in the AFL at 19 are better than Corey Seager's, for example, who was born the same time of year and hadn't even made it to AA yet at that point.  That made Seager a top-40 prospect that winter.

He’s got no power.   That’s why.

He's 19, 6'2", and 190 lbs. He can grow into some power. For comparison, he has about the same power grade as Trea Turner did.

That's one of the two reasons, and it's not a particularly good one.  Victor Robles hit 9 homers in A ball at age 19.  He just hit 17 as a 22-year-old MLB rookie.  Garcia's a big guy who hit 22 doubles this year.  It'll come.

Package him and someone else off for Kris Bryant if we cant resign Rendon.

Ride the iron while its hot. Kris is an AS caliber player.

Trying no to get too excited about him yet, but he’s mashing so far:

I'm beginning to think that, if he hits at AA or AAA, he may be a midseason call-up for 2B (castro to 3d) if Kieboom hasn't nailed down the job.

I think you'd need a few injuries to make that happen. I think Rizzo is perfectly happy with AsCabby at third until the deadline.

However, if Garcia hits well in AA or AAA ball, his trade value shoots up and you may not need to deal him AND Kieboom to get Bryant.

I wonder what they will do with Garcia  if there are no minor league games.  HE needs to develop, but I don't think they want to burn a year of him being an extra guy on the MLB roster, either.  What is the talk about how teams will handle not ready for MLB, youngish, important prospects?

Well, his first game was good as Kieboom's last year.  Let's hope he builds from that.  If he can just take over the position, that'll mean we have a 20 yr old at 2d, a 21 in LF, and a 22 in CF, with maybe a 22 yr old at 3d, at least against lefties.

I think you could move Garcia to short or even third. He has the arm. Hes already one of, if not the, best infielders on the roster. And he will grow into some more power.

That has to be at least a 20 homer body in his prime

.353   .389   .977, 1 HR in his first 4 games.  Not a bad way to start.

I'm only resurrecting this post to marvel at our naivety back on March 2nd of 2020.

normal rule  is to lock this when he gets called up.  TBH, I don't think this kid plays in the minors again.

yeah, i left it open for a few more days, but with Davey saying he's got the 2B job at least until Castro returns, it's time to lock it.

Interesting to note that Garcia is exclusively playing SS so far this season. I would have thought he'd be at 2nd with the plan being to bring him up this year if he shows he's ready.

He won't be ready this year.  Trea's replacement eventually.  Next year Trea can play 2B to help devalue his next contract.

looks like they are keeping their 3 best middle infielders at SS at 3 different levels:  Garcia at AAA, Cluff at AA, and Antuna at A+.  Kieboom is the only one that they've moved off SS so far.  Garcia may have a light enough bat that the only place he could be a regular on a good team is SS.  A lefty hitting, good glove SS is a nice asset if he can hit passably.

He grades out better, defensively at shortstop, than Turner ever did. Rizzo is definitely setting the table to start the rebuild with a trade of Turner, while also making Garcia's value as high as possible

makes sense. If they go for it this year rather than cash out, Garcia can be put in a package,  especially if he looks ok hitting and one of the other MIs look like they can handle the position in 2022 or 2023.

I was thinking more along the lines of if they get a long term deal with Turner.
