I still think I would rather have Norris over Lobaton

I value Loby and his defense/repoire with the pitchers a little more than I think I would Norris's bat.

Agreed. Your backup C is gonna suck offensively no matter what anyway, might as well get the best defensive/pitcher handler you can. Plus Loby seems like a great clubhouse guy and his teammates love him. Who knows what you're getting out of Norris who kind of has an jerk-y vibe about him?

Chelsea Janes implied that the pitchers hated Norris at one point.

Wieters has an OPS under .600 since the beginning of May.

You can live with bad offense at catcher but the Nats need more from behind plate.

Bat? He's batting .201,  .258 OBP.

Weiters is beyond pathetic. He is entering the realm of Espi. For those who are opting for FA Suzuki may I remind you that Boras negotiated a 2 year deal with Weiters having the option to opt out NOT the Nats. We are freakin stuck with him for another year.

I'd suggest benching him but neither other option is batting his own weight.

You can always tell him to opt out or get zero at bats next year heading into his next contract

He'd take the zero at bats.

I like your answer but why would he give a crap as he is receiving 10 mil ? And the Lerners would never let that happen paying a useless bench player that much money. We did pay McLouth (?) 5 mil for absolutely no contribution but double?

If he opts in, the 60 day dl seems like a good idea

He probably expects to get another decent contract at some point

Yeah, his strategy (or Boras's) is probably to float a rumor that he was injured all season and he's fully recovered.  Even so he'll still probably opt-in, and the threat of zero (or few) at bats will work in his favor - more "recovery" time, and less chances for other teams to see how putrid he really is.

At that point he's just washed up- what happens to his value if he's the third catcher on the roster?

I'm stressing about the playoffs not next year.

Kevin Long has supposedly been working with Wieters trying to get him to use his lower half more.  The old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" doesn't apply here.

You can see a difference in his swing on the HR the other day

vs that grand slam he hit in Chicago

https://www.mlb.com/video/wieters-grand-slam-to-center/c-1695631183

(yes I know it is from the opposite side but it's the best sample I can find of how weird his swing and especially his follow-through got)

The swing in Chicago is all shoulder and upper arm, and the ST shot you can see his feet aren't moving around as much and he's swinging more from his core and his lower half. That's more consistent with how he was swinging early in the 2017 season (and he was batting .273 through the end of May). He is INCREDIBLY strong if he can lob one out on a shoulder-driven swing.  If he can keep his feet planted and swing from his thighs, he'll have good numbers this year.

KLong is a realllllly good hitting coach. Would not be surprised if he could squeeze some production out of Wieters.

Thanks Patti. Here’s hoping it makes a difference through the season.
