Any chance that they meant Gio Gonzalez and not Lucas Giolito?

Cost seems high but I didn't watch enough baseball this year to sour on Giolito like everyone else has done.

That is the most interesting thing to me. Wonder what that means for Rizzo going forward in drafts. Took Luzardo this year.

Rizzo sounds like Eaton will make a corner move in a few years.    He does like the control/pay and  ...  "energy".

I think this is the opinion of many, but I guess we'll know once Don Cooper teaches Giolito the cutter :) Happy they're going to the AL Central where I won't have to hear about them ever again. I forgot Zimmermann was ever even on the team this year!
well now the talk is Zimmermann needs surgery. dodged that bullet.

A lot of people don't like this. People saying it smacks of desperation. Not to me so much.

You have to look at the totality of the offseason. If Rizzo can go pay cash for a pretty near major league ready pitcher to replace Lopez, all will be well.

Giolito was no longer in favor with the FO. Not surprised he's gone.

So far, I'm okay. Now, a closer and a little something for lean times in the starting rotation.

Agreed. Big prices but people undervalue Eaton.

Rizzo is gone in two years.

Probably to greener pastures where the owners aren't so involved.

Nope. Ownership had to approve deal since he was adding payroll.

Rizzo: "We have our starting rotation from last year intact."

It just feels strange to me that there are people who would be okay with acquiring Chris Sale at a position of non-need (14.8 bWAR over the previous 3 seasons) but are outraged with acquiring Adam Eaton at a position of HEAVY need (15.4 bWAR over the previous 3 seasons).

Especially when Sale would have cost Robles as well, and is under team control for fewer seasons at a higher price.

He's not perfect, but he's a pretty decent player who seems to tick the boxes most people here care about (gets Espinosa out of the lineup, makes contact).

I'd rather give up this package for Eaton than that one for Sale, not least because merely watching him throw makes the name Tommy John pop into my head.  I just can't see Sale's arm lasting.  That said, I would really have hoped to have gotten this one done for less, and I'm not sure there wasn't some tunnel vision going on here.

This would be like if the Mets traded Havery and Syndergaard for 5 years of cheap Josh Redick.

Because Giolito and Lopez have proven to be Harvey and Syndergaard?

It makes sense to deal our minor league pitching. Again, our window is open for just 2 more years. We're rebuilding in 2019 anyways. Accept it, it's happening.

For next 2 years, you have:

Scherzer
Strasburg
Roark
Ross
Gonzalez/rotating 5th starter

Turner
Eaton
Murphy
Harper
Werth
Rendon
Zimmerman
Norris
P

That is a...great lineup and rotation.

The lineup is still problematic, but I agree with your reasoning.

The trade isn't the best, but it makes sense given where the Nats are.
