check out Daniel Johnson.  has an 80 speed grade, 70 arm, and 60 defense, albeit with only 45s for hitting and power.  He could be an eye to keep an eye on, probably as Hagerstown's centerfielder in 2017.

Lots of CF guys in the system (not saying all prospects). Gotta find a spot for Blake Perkins and Nick Banks still. Batista, Goodwin, MAT at higher levels.

Baseball America's new Nats top ten prospect list came out yesterday.  Robles, Fedde, Soto, Difo, and Stevenson are the top five.  That's exciting to me that Soto, only 17,  is ranked third.

Kerr has been talking about him as a potential Harper replacement. He hits the ball real hard and hit well in Rookie ball as a 17yr old Domincan rookie. It shows how much they think of him that he played on the Gulf Coast team right away and will be playing A ball next year.

He's already a big dude at 17, with plus power. Easy to see him filling out and becoming a plus plus power type of guy. He's got a solid approach to hitting already too. Great signing. Hard to project at that age, but I'm sure he'll start at GCL again, unless he really shows up at ST. Have to hope so, and not like Franco last season.

They challenged him with a short stint in Auburn to end the year, and he held his own.  I wouldn't rule out a push to Hagerstown to start the year, but if he remains in short season, he'll start at Auburn IMO.

I think where he starts has more to do with service time rules than ability.

That out of the way, I agree with you.

Since we never posted this one. Personally, not that high on Neuse, and think Stevenson & Ward should be higher. Gutierrez is still one of my favs too, but that's probably right where he should be. Tyler Watson will shoot up this year if he continues what he did last year (like Sickels said). It's obviously not the cream of the crop anymore, but I still think there's a ton of talented prospects there.

Don't really understand his love for Neuse, either. Thanks for posting!

He's always been regarded as a pure hitter without many other tools.  Enough people seem to see enough potential in his hot tool to warrant some degree of optimism.

It does?

His new grades do, methinks. This time last year his FB was an 80 and his curve was in the 70 range depending on scouting service.

Now both are 60s. Huge drops.

With those grades I would think he is only 25 because he was so highly rated before.

I don't want to root against the guy, and Lopez took some hits in scouting rankings before last year too, but it makes the price for Eaton seem a lot more reasonable.  Compare it to the price for Sale - consensus #2 prospect, an arm comparable to Lopez, and other decent prospects. It doesn't look like Shelby Miller level stupidity.

Obviously in the end the trade will be judged by how the pitchers turn out and how Eaton does. But yeah, to me franchises are in this situation all the time - there are always teams with young fireballers rising in the minors and TINSTAAPP. You can go back 5 years, 10 years, whatever, and look at Baseball America's top 100 list and there will be a few teams that have multiple top-50 SP prospects, and I bet the majority of those teams wouldn't have regretted trading them for an impact, established position player.

5 years ago you could point to the Seattle Mariners - pre-2012 and pre-2013 Danny Hultzen and Taijuan Walker were both in the top 30. They were supposed to anchor Seattle's rotation for a decade.

5 years before that the Rays were looking forward to the HOF careers of Wade Davis and Jake McGee.

Anyways, of course it would have been nice if Giolito had a 2016 that made him look like the second coming of Stephen Strasburg. First of all, maybe we wouldn't still be starting Gio Gonzalez. But second of all, maybe we could have gotten a better player than Adam Eaton in return. However, Rizzo was not in that position and clearly was not trading a top-5 prospect. The scouting reports have a consensus on Giolito's devaluation.

do you remember Texas and D-V-D?  Diamond, Volquez, Danks?  I don't think the regret trading Volquez for Jeff Hamilton (that was the deal, right?).  Then wasn't the Mets "Generation K?"  That was Pelfrey and I forget the others.

Josh. And probably not, but Volquez has ended up being an overpaid, but serviceable, guy in the bigs. Hamilton ended up being an overpaid flameout once again.

yes, Jeff was a Hobey Baker nominee and all American for Yale back around 1999 or so :)

Hamilton ended up being overpaid by the Angels, but you can't quibble with his first time through with Texas.  Volquez did have a few good years, no question, probably enough to merit his hype (not Danks and Diamond), but Texas won that trade bigly.

Definitely. I think his first two seasons in Tejas alone were worth more WAR than Volquez' entire career

These guys putting the two int'l signings in the top-10 only because of their bonus amount is... wrong. I'd put 20-30 guys before Augstin too.
