Strange things can happen. The Nats have Scherzer and Roark, at least.

(1) Spahn and Sain / and pray for rain

(2) Yankees won the World Series in 1978 with only one starting pitcher, Ron Guidry, and one relief pitcher, Goose Gossage (won Game 4). Catfish Hunter's arm was falling off, although Hunter was such an ace that he helped even though his arm was in shreds (two starts, and won the clincher).

(3) Washington ball club won the 1924 World Series even though Walter Johnson lost all of his starts. Came in to pitch four innings of relief and to win Game 7.
The Orioles swept the Tigers a couple of years ago with matchups of Scherzer vs. Tillman, Verlander vs. Chen, and Price vs. Norris. Crazy stuff can happen.

Not too long ago a team beat us and won the World Series coming into the playoffs with their top four starters having ERAs of 2.98, 3.57, 4.00, and 4.74.   Their closer was 23 for 28 in save opportunities, with a 3.72 ERA.  They had just two batters hitting over .300 (.305 and .311) and only one player with more than 20 home runs.

That team was the 2014 Giants.

They didn't have Drew Storen...or Matt Williams, for that matter...

"Wasn't there an Oreos team that lost the series with 4 twenty game winners?" asked Bob Prince.    :couch:

They did have a lineup with pretty strong OBPs.   Don't strike out and good things happen.

What is most concerting to me is several posters elsewhere have said a flexor strain is a precursor to a UCL. And wasn't SS initial diagnosis in 2010 the same flexor mass strain?

Flexor tendon. Not sure what the difference is, though.

And it hasn't uniformly been a precursor.

I haven't read it elsewhere in the last 3 hours, but I have the same recollection, both generally and about Stras in 2010.

Honestly I would shut him down, and I strongly suspect the Nats will do the same. Rizzo doesn't view "win a playoff series" or even "win a World Series" as part of his job description. His job is to be competitive in the regular season every single year. He will shut down Strasburg in 2016 so he can have him in 2017, 2018, etc.

Which is pretty pathetic.

What would be really embarrassing is if the mets go deeper in the playoffs than the nats without Harvey and possibly DeGrom while the nats organization gives us the BS excuse that not having Strasburg led to an early exit.

As soon as Rizzo got that extension, he was safe and got the message that "regular season dominance" is enough. Pathetic

I have a little inside info that I heard yesterday which may or may not be common knowledge right now - They are going to let the swelling go down and begin the rehab process. They are not going to shut him down until he's had the opportunity to do some rehab. They want him available for the playoffs.

This would be common sense.  Breaks and tears pretty much dictate your recover process: you're shut down for a while, period, no choice. It's more common to take a "wait and see" approach with a strain because you can't evaluate how bad it is till the swelling goes down and the initial soreness goes away, and you need to start rehab ASAP no matter what, because you've got to keep things moving and limber even if you're going to be shut down. If they shut him down, he'll still be going to some form of rehab.
