That doesn't matter. What matters is the reality that Phelps has had to contend with many more elite swimmers from many countries than Bolt has has to contend with in the two sprints he specializes in.

Don't go by medal count. Go by how many athletes actually pose a threat to them. There are very few who challenge Bolt because countries don't produce many great sprinters. Phelps has had to fend off competition from many countries including his own. Swimming also requires more overall power.

Nobody disputes that there is an enormous talent gap between Bolt and his competitors. The question is: is that because Bolt is amazing, or because his competition for the last decade have all been slouches?

But he's an above average piece of crap.    He's a floater.

I think it's a bit of both. The US has failed to produce someone who can really challenge him. His best competition has come from his own countrymen.

The US has two really good black swimmers right now. And after their performances I saw two groups of blacks at the pool the next day learning how to swim.

As for white sprinters, the Dutch lady is very good at the 200m but in reality it's tough to compete against the Jamaican and American women.

I didn't mean to start an argument/disagreement. I was simply stating that I can't decide.

Like he said, both are almost perfect at what they do. I just feel like anyone can run.

No matter where you're from, and you have the ability, you can run. Not everyone can even be trained to swim. A few of us are lucky that were thrown in to your pool at 4 years old and told "swim back or drown."

I'd love to see the percentages of people that are able to run vs able to swim from certain ages.
