Matt Latos
« Topic Start: August 10, 2016, 02:47:22 PM »
Two outings in the last week for the Syracuse GCL Nationals, 7 IP, 0.00 ERA, 10Ks, 1BBs, 1H

He's more than likely our #5 when we need one.

GCL Nationals

I'd be very surprised if he does anything this late into the season (MiLB year is done in early Sept. and he's just getting rehab starts), but maybe.

3 IP in his first outing on 7/31, 4 IP on 8/4, 4 more today.

Just saw his outing results from today:

4 IP, 2 ER, 2BB, 3HA, 8Ks

Figure 2-3 more starts before we could hope for 5-6 innings out of him.

Yeah, maybe he eats some innings in Sept. I'd rather have Ross back and starting if he's gonna be the guy down the stretch, but I guess a BP role for him isn't bad either. We'll see. Worth keeping an eye on him.

Speaking of old scrub SPs: Arroyo hasn't pitched since getting a rehab start on 7/2. Can't recall what was said about that.

Latos continues to pitch well at Syracuse but I wonder if the Nats want to use a 40 man slot on him.

Last five starts:
22 IP
1.23 ERA (only allowed runs in 2 of five starts)
13 HA
3 ER
10 BB
24 Ks

He went 6IP on 8/22 (0 ERA, 3BB, 3Ks), and 5 on 8/16.  He should be about ready for the majors.

He pitched today and will more likely pitch next week replacing Cole until Stras is back and then stay in the rotation if Giolito is limited to innings or does not perform.

Makes sense. I would rather the Nats start a mediocre MLB pitcher than Cole / Giolito / Lopez, and Ross seems headed to 2 - 3 inning relief pitcher in mid-September, at earliest.

Born in Alexandria, Va, only 28 years old.  I expect he'll be "home" within the week.

I read somewhere that if he isn't on the 25 man by tomorrow, he can opt out, go elsewhere.

6IP, 7H, 1ER, 0BB, 4Ks in his start yesterday.  I'd take that over Giolito or Cole right now.

Good start two nights ago: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Can we unlock the Giolito thread?  Decent outing tonight: 6.2, 7 hits, 0 er, 2bb, 7ks. Bryan Harper threw 1.1 perfect with two ks.

So if somebody is sucking badly in AAA, we should not consider that in calling them up to the majors?

You are correct:

Matt Grace seems to be the most likely person to cut if the Nats choose to keep Latos.

Cut Grace.

Call up Latos.

Option Giolito.

Continue to have a short bench for the next 3 days.

Push Lopez, Ross, Giolito, and Cole to the bullpen in September (obviously not all of them until Strasburg is back.)

Latos has agreed to extending his deadline to Sept 1 in exchange for a promise of being a September call up.

  so now they hav to clear a 40-man slot. Moving Ross to the 60 day might make sense.

Don't think it will be Ross. They will need him even if just as a reliever to start with. Latos will replace either Cole or Gio (more likely) as a starter. They could possibly drop Martin or put Drew on 60 day if they think he cannot make it back this year (unless he is already on the list, not sure).

Look over your shoulder, Matt den Dekker.

Someone said Ross could be backdated to his last appearance, which was on 7/2/16.  It would not mean extra time on the DL.  Stephen Drew last appeared on 7/23, so putting him on the 60 day would keep him out until about the last 10 days of the season.

Drew to 60 is a good way to preserve a roster spot, as it would only become an issue if he recovers, and it's entirely possible his career is over.

Ross to 60 just briefly delays the decision of who to cut.

I say cut den Dekker. He's OPSing like .600 in AAA, he's been surpassed by Goodwin, and he's out of options so he needs to be waived in spring training anyway.

Yep, Dekker is definitely another option, not that Martin helped his cause tonight.
