Orioles might have the worst outfield defense in baseball this year...but the best infield defense.
Reminds me of arguments I had with NYY fans back in the late 70s. Red Sox had terrific outfield defense, with Evans and Lynn and Yaz at least some of the time instead of Rice, but poor defense with Butch Hobson, Rick Burleson, Jerry Remy, and George Scott. Yankees had a lousy outfield defensively, I think with the corpse of Roy White along side Mickey Rivers and Lou Pinella, but had terrific infield defense with Nettles, Randolph, Chambliss, and some guy whose name escapes me
. Infield matters more.
Butch Hobson I think had over 30 errors in 1978, mostly thrown by Scott, who made Sandoval look like Ghandi in terms of his physique at that point. Hobson had bone chips in his throwing arm and it would lock up when he threw. After the '78 team blew its lead, Zimmer finally replaced Hobson for the last week or two with Jack Brohammer (what a great name! ), who could field, and put Bill Lee back in the rotation after fighting him all season. They made up 4.5 games on the NYY to set up the 1 game playoff.
