People acting it like it is a done deal that he will sign with the Yankees are really being silly imo Sure they Yankees will clear a lot of salary BUT they won't just sit there waiting for Bryce they will have to sign other people The Nats are not a small market team - small market teams are not defined by their market size but by how much their owners have and are willing to spend Nats owners have a tonne of money and are willing to spend (plus the TV deal will get straightened out which will help)Bryce signing with the Nats is just as likely as any scenario --- yes he's spoken of his love for Mantle/Yankees etc but he has also spoken of playing for 1 team his whole career so that's a wash too
The Nats owners are playing like a mid-market team. That's why Papelbon is on the team.
if by mid market you mean 6th highest opening day payroll in the MLB last season, then yes, totally mid market
That's only because of terrible contracts. They have zero payroll flexibility.
That seems like a gm issue not an ownership problem
Ownership's gotten them into two of those bad contracts... Zimm's deal -- Rizzo bet on a bounceback and was wrong. That's the only one I'd blame him for. Werth and Max were the Lerners doing. Outside of those 3, the rest of the contracts are reasonable.
My guess (just a guess) is that he goes to the highest bid from a legitimate team (i.e. no repeat of ARod to the Rangers). That leaves the Dodgers, Angels, Giants, Tigers, Rangers, Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Nats and probably a few that I'm forgetting. I think he's more likely to go to the nats than any one of the other teams, but less likely to go to stay than leave
Say hello to your 2019 Washington Nationals:1. Turner - SS2. Difo - 2B3. Rendon - 3B4. Robles - CF5. Zimmerman 1B6. Taylor - RF7. Kieboom - C8. Goodwin - RFRotation: Scherzer, Giolito, Ross, Cole, Roark.That's not all that bad on paper...
Stevenson? Also gotta figure the 2016 draftee will be in there somewhere.
Bryce hangin' with Kevin Harvick on the starting grid of the Daytona 500...
Just saw that too. Where the hell are you?
Sittin' by the phone...waiting for MacClellan to call...
This is a silly breakaway argument that misses the premise: Bryce's dad loves the Yankees, Bryce loves his dad. Automatic edge. Impossible to know how much it matters.
Bryce's Dad was also quoted in a Washington Post magazine article less than a year after Bryce signed with the Nationals saying, with no caveats, that he wants Bryce to play for one team for his entire career. You can look it up - in the original article, or I think I posted the original quote and/or a link to it shortly after the article was published.
I'd be willing to bet that Bryce's Dad wants Bryce to go to the team that gives him the best chance to win multiple championships. That team does not reside in the District of Columbia.
Bryce was asked about the Yankees talk and future contract:http://www.csnmidatlantic.com/baseball-washington-nationals/talk/bryce-harper-talk-400m-contract-spring-training-new-york-yankees
