Assuming Desmond accepts the QO; you know, if LaRussa were still with the Cards, I'd bet he'd do that trade.

There is the other minor problem, which is that Heyward is also a free agent.  I believe HalfSmokes might have just gotten you to bite on a bit of a fishing trip.

It does.  I liked it. I thought it might be a better idea to package Desmond, Span, and Zimmermann to see if we could get Greinke or Price, though.

Now that's an offseason for you. Holy crap. I like it. Wait, you're trading Giolito? No way.

Magic

Presumably Werth, or we DFA'ed him and his $21M salary.  Ramos seems to have vanished too.  It's a convenient  pair of disappearances, too, otherwise that team's payroll would be right about at $200 million.

hey, um, on Millar's show today, they said Heyman suggested Strasburg for Andrew Miller.  Yanks have the bullpen depth, need SP . . .

Kimbrel is worth significantly more than that, bro. You'd have to match what they gave up to get him since he hasn't lost value and still is controllable.

Plus the part about the cash is not happening.

So, in a series of trades (several of which the other team would laugh at), the Nats give up 16 players for 5, destroy almost their entire farm system, and still end up with a team that has significant questions and almost no depth (for example, what happens to that team if a starting pitcher gets hurt?  What if any of the three outfielders get hurt at all?  What if any of the starting infielders besides Zimmerman get hurt?).  Besides Giolito, whose existence somehow hasn't been a stumbling block in the new round of trades in which his name would be the first mentioned by the other side, there is nothing in terms of starters left above...well, anywhere.  If any position player besides Zimmerman gets hurt, then Espinosa/den Dekker slides in and you have no backup infielder or outfielders besides...well, who?

One thing certain...no matter who we have on the 25 man roster on opening day, Mike Rizzo will be happy with the team he constructed.

And you and Slate will be arguing back and forth about who is greater Roark or Scherzer.
