That just isn't how manager contracts are designed these days, especially for a well-regarded guy like Black. Really bad move by Rizzo.

I don't think it's Rizzo. I think it's the Lerners not knowing what a manager is worth...

Black accepted #Nats job last week, but no idea it would pay less than $2 million over 2 years. http://usat.ly/1NnnF7w

WTF is wrong with this team?  I think Coach O'Conner with UVA's baseball team make more than this (or at least he will now).
I think the bigger question is how Black didn't know the annual salary at first.

They know...that's why they never published Williams salary.

IIRC, Riggleman was making $600K.

Williams had to be in that same general range...

Maybe he thought they meant $2MM/yr...not over 2 years...

Baker could probably make more money on TBS/MLB Network than the pittance the Lerners are probably offering anyway.

This organization is a freaking joke.  I'm embarrassed by this news.  I still don't know why Martinez never got an interview.  I feel that Baker will have short term success, but long term failure if hired.

Took the words out of my mouth. Absolute joke of an organization, I am embarrassed.

Should have just hired Randy Knorr if they wanted to be cheap.

This is the most embarrassing day in franchise history since the Esmailyn Gonzalez scandal broke.

They would have been better leaving the position vacant than hiring Baker.  I'd be royally pissed if I'd actually renewed my tickets, but instead I will just point and laugh.  What an utterly stupid move.  Why don't they hire Desmond to be the hitting coach, too?

I wonder if rizzo resigns. I suspect this is a Lerner issue more so than a Rizzo issue.

Utter incompetence, very redskinesque.  I'm SO glad I didn't renew my season ticket package.

+1.

this team had the best record in the NL twice in the last 4 years but lost in the division series because of poor management of the pitching staff and poor decisions on the bullpen.  What has Baker done over his entire managing career to give the Nationals confidence he can address this problem?

Well, expect Strasburg and Scherzer to throw 230 innings each next year.  Maybe that is a good thing if you think this team has a very short horizon and you want to go full Mets now.  But you can bet that Scherzer gets a sore arm before the end of his contract because there is no way Dusty is going to force Scherzer to save bullets and rest when he needs to.

He managed Kent and Bonds.  Maybe he can manage Papelbon and Bryce.

Speaking of Bryce, this crud about him being able manage superstars makes me wonder if this guy will become Bryce binky.

I'm with those who had Dusty at the very bottom of my list, so yeah, I'm also with those who this morning are pretty discouraged by this whole turn of events. I dare say we're a majority. For all of the incredibly good feelings toward the Lerners last off-season, I think the pendulum has swung to the other extreme.
