No. I use a special pitch track.

A really great piece from SI  about the Atlantic League. With a focus on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. It talks a lot about the rule changes they’re experimenting with. It’s a long read but read on so you can get to the section about automated strakes. It’s a great read...well worth it   https://amp.si.com/mlb/2019/07/25/baseball-rule-changes-atlantic-leaguers

So I went to the Atlantic League's game today in Waldorf between the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and the Somerset (NH) Patriots. To see the electronic ump in action.

As far as I could tell it was seamless. Most people in the stands probably have no idea. The ump had an ear piece in his left ear and he called balls and strikes just like normal. No delays. And the zone seemed about the same. The only thing I noticed is that players were not complaining and the catcher was not trying to frame pitches. :mg: :mg: :mg: :mg:

I'm telling you this technology is coming real soon to MLB. I was told that MLB has a rep at every game monitoring every pitch.

This is an excellent report on the automated umpiring in the Atlantic League. Great video too.

NEVER !!!

So what about technology.  The technology exists to pitch from a machine as well.

The calling of balls & strikes adds a level of excitement that would only be detrimental to the fan enjoyment if balls/strikes were automated.

The technology is here!

Start in MLB next season. You might need to radius the corner like human umps have done for years. But as long as there's a capture available like there was for that call, do it.

Also, that kid should not have been tossed.

My question is how do they handle borderline calls? Is it going to be like hockey where the whole puck has to cross the blue line? Or like football where if any part of the ball breaks the plane, it's in the zone?

As long as it’s consistent, who cares

The strike zone is pretty explicitly described in the rule book. If any part of the ball enters any part of the zone, it is supposed to be a strike.

You think players, coaches, and fans constantly nagging about balls and strikes is exciting?

Right -- it's overdue.  The actual zone can be fine tuned as needed during Spring Training.

I thought the HP ump last night (Yanks/Astros) was as good as I've seen recently.     Of course, I wasn't focused on the game and I don't have any rooting interests.    When I did pay attention, he was solid.

It’s tiresome.  But they should shut the freak up and play ball.

Game 6 ump not so good IMO. He was calling strikes off the plate on both corners. I didn't count them but sure seemed to favor Houston. In the later innings he called a strike that was off the inner half of the plate. The next pitch was off the outer half and was called a ball. Commentator said "he can't widen the plate on both sides. I'm thinking, "what game have they been watching because he'd been doing just that all night".
