That sixth extra base hit snuck up on Matt

Yeah, so did burning through his bullpen the last two days in two games that weren't close.  It's really shocking that actions have consequences.

Not pulling Max was inexcusable.

Although you are right, the bullpen was so bad it wouldn't have mattered anyway. Our only hope would have been the PH for Max making the difference with 2 on.

The players want to win no doubt, the role of the manager is to get them collectively into a position to win.  Mattie fails here miserably; he has no clue who to play beyond his etch-sketch approach to substitutions

Casey Jansen has been an epic fails for awhile now, ERA ~5 and against David Wright, fresh meat
You are right but he has to pitch these guys sometime--that's what Rizzo gave him.  And five runs with your supposed ace on the mound should;t come down to the bullpen in the middle innings.

For a MLB Manager I am shocked how little at he has no feel or understanding of the abilities of his bullpen- Is McCatty giving him bad intel or is he not listening?

He's probably not listening.

What abilities does our bullpen have?  It's from bad to worse out there. He has made some bad moves all year but you have to face the fact that the bullpen is bad.

Matt doesn't have a feel for any of his players, period.  He doesn't have a feel for the game, oddly.

I think MW would probably make a good hitting coach.  Unfortunately you can't really demote him as that would be weird.

Assume you mean for the other team.

What really stinks is that I want the Nats to make the playoffs, but MW is incompetent and I want him gone. The only way that happens, or at least potentially happens, is if the Nats don't make it. I'm conflicted.

For everyone upset about MW not pulling Scherzer after giving up the 4th run, what would it have mattered? You saw what the pen did the next two inninings.

Your right.  Can't blame him for today's loss. It's on the players. However he should still be fired.

I think PH potentiall scoring 2 to give us a 3 run lead and then 2 innings of Fister could have been different - we will never know. It was all false hope, I have given up and so have the team. freak them

I'd go for as many runs as I could by pinch hitting for Scherzer.

As the manager of this team, you should assume that you're going to have to outscore your own bullpen.

I don't understand this concept of the team "giving up." They lost, but it's not for lack of effort. Are you saying they were not trying?

And regardless, the players not performing shouldn't excuse managerial blunders.

Did you feel even a glimmer of hope after the Mets tied it up? Did we have what, 1 guy reach base after that Scherzer plate appearance.. They may not have given up but they are about as soft as butter on a 90 degree day. No heart, no respect for fans of themselves. Pathetic

Of course I had hope. I was just at a game on Friday where they tied it with two outs in the ninth and won it in extra innings. Three runs is one swing in baseball.

But no matter. It's not about effort, heart, or hustle. They just got beat. The other guys get paychecks too.

Maybe if you're Ian Desmond

See I'll take issue with this.. Zim has been the hottest hitter on the planet, big moment comes and he K's on three pitches and it wasn't anybody special, he lost himself. Harper crapped himseld and Werth and Rendon went back to their clueless selves. The bullpen froze up and couldn't get it done and both the manager and staff "ace" wilted in a big spot.

It is about effort heart and hustle, have a look at a team like the Royals, tell me they are superior in name value and team quality? their starting pitching is gross but they play every game like it matters and subsequently win while we take the "It's only April approach"
