Might have been better for him to say "don't be afraid to ambush what looks like a pitching mistake."
But you have to think this probably came on the heels of advice to lay off pitches and work counts because of previous hackathons.  Reeks of throwing stuff against the wall and seeing what sticks rather than a professional and effective approach.

Start your at bat aggressively, and be more cautious with 2 strikes.

There, I'll wait for my manager of the year award.

They won't announce it today.  But he's available if he's sitting out there, and Strasburg is supposed to pitch tomorrow.

Saturday.

Or he's just kickin' it out there. I'd like to see Stras bump the rotation back a day and keep Fister there, at least for now.

You gotta give Pettibon a pass. Sure he was a complete failure as a HEAD coach.  As a defensive coordination, the best we've ever seen in DC.

That's what I meant - solely his head coaching tenure - he was indeed an outstanding defensive coordinator. (Another example of the Peter Principle as it applies to sports.)

Mark Zuckerman        ✔ @ZuckermanCSN

Williams spoke to players. His message: "We're best when we're aggressive." Wants them to take extra bases, swing at pitches in good counts.

I'm okay with this. If you're up 2-0 in a count and you see a fastball down the middle, swing.

We got too many guys who just stare at heaters right down the heart of the plate and end up swinging at off speed junk when they're at 2 strikes.

Jon Heyman says that the team isn't really a fan of Williams:

Here's the relevant excerpt:  http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/25262626/inside-baseball-padres-reds-throw-late-deadline-curves-and-other-notes

It's said to be an "unhappy scene" around the Nats, as manager Matt Williams has not be well-received by many players, who find him "not loose" and "never relaxed." One player says that while Williams looks tight as soon as games begin, it isn't affecting the players, saying, "The players are pretty loose. We have a lot of fun. I don't really fell like the players are tight. We're a pretty rowdy, loose, fun-loving bunch. We have a good ol' time regardless of what's goin' on with our skipper. I don't think it affects us. That's just how he is." Players are wondering about Williams' bullpen choices, though, from as far back as failing to use Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard in Game 5 of last year's NLDS vs. the Giants. It was odd again to see Williams not employ Storen and Jonathan Papelbon in two tight games against the Mets last week (while using the pair down five runs in their first game as soon as they left New York). GM Mike Rizzo didn't respond to a message ... Ian Desmond is having a nightmare season in his walk year, with a .616 OPS and 0.1 WAR. But his teammates still believe in his talent.

If the Nats make the playoffs, who's your 18th inning guy?    :hysterical:

#AskMatt Lots of talk about the appropriateness of fans booing.  What's the best way to communicate that we're booing you, not the players?

If Jordan Zimmermann is throwing a one hitter thru 8 2/3 again, when should we expect to see Aaron Barrett? #AskMatt :lmao:

not sure where else to post this - http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/what-can-the-nationals-do/

Lost me at: "We know that the Nationals have a great pitching staff. Their bullpen unit is solid."

Let's be honest though.

Matt is a crappy manager, but even a good manager wouldn't make this team more than a few wins better. Werth can't drive in runs, he can't get on base, even without 100 at-bats you can see he's bad news. Team is too frail and streaky.

Just start over, man.

That's the way we always do it.   That's in the book.      Williams = never thinks outside the box.
