At least if we are going down, we are going down with our best, Casey Jannsen, on the mound!  48 pitches in 2 nights against the best team in the league.  Go get 'em Tiger.  Meanwhile, Paplebon has not faced the Cards or Mets in 5 games since being acquired.  My sources tell me he will be available to pitch tonight.

Standard Decision.

listening to him on the junkies now, I'm really starting to think he's just dumb. I thought he was stubborn and made questionable decisions, but his logic for not using paplebon really comes down to 'he's our closer and we weren't winning' How did he get hired- you'd assume that the guy doing the hiring would run through some scenarios/discuss philosophies - did Rizzo not realize that williams was dumb as a sack of bricks?

Wanted a 1-inning reliever b/c pitcher's spot up in 10th.

Does he know about the double-switch?

I never liked Matt Williams as a player and, from my limited interactions with him in person, always got the impression he thought he was a lot smarter than he could ever dream of being.  Listening to him confirms he's still the same clown he was 10 plus years ago.

Did anyone think he'd retire from baseball and all of a sudden become intelligent?

In that situation, 28 or 29 out of 30 MLB managers would do the same thing.  You can twist yourself into knots envisioning every last scenario or you can trust your guys as MW does (to a fault, it seems).

I don't know if 28 out of 30 managers would do it in a do-or-die game. Every game we play takes us that much closer to not being able to  catch the Mets.  The last two games against the Cards, all hands should have been on deck. Even starting pitchers. There's not time to catch up.

Unless they aren't playing for the playoffs anymore?

Agreed especially since rosters could expand in September.  They should have had a deeper bullpen available and they didn't.

Craig Calcaterra has been spot on regarding Williams

The book says you don’t use your closer in a tie game on the road, dammit. And that holds even if the alternative is letting a known arsonist into the fireworks shop and asking him to make sure the place is locked up before he leaves.

The Nats are not a bad team as we tend to think of bad teams. They just have a bad manager. A bad manager who will be looking for a job soon. As soon as early this afternoon if I or anyone with anything approaching a sense of urgency was running the Washington Nationals.

Obviously there is no urgency being shown by Rizzo since it's been glaringly obvious since last post season that Williams cannot handle being a major league manager and yet he's allowed to blow game after game with his poor decision making.  So, is Rizzo stubborn or as stupid as Matt for sticking with this :clown: for so long and blowing any hope we had for this season???

I know, I'm normally pretty easy going but these last two games I mean, we had them, we absolutely had them...and yet we found a way to lose :(  Blowouts suck but are easier to deal with than seeing that :w: within reach and blowing it on stupid play and stupid managerial decisions, SO frustrating losing like that :(
