Seems like there should be a player of the year award for each league and an MVP for MLB as a whole.

I don't know the exact breakdown or history but I know that the NFL makes a distinction between "best" and "most valuable".  I clearly recall that Larry Brown was Player of the Year in 1972. Not MVP, Player of the Year.  And that Mark Mosely was MVP in 1982. Clearly, Mosely was not remotely considered the best player, but he was deemed the most valuable.

Haha ok you got me, clearly it's just my opinion, but at the same time to me it's common sense.  The best statistical player if it's not close, and if it's extremely close then the person who really helped his team win the most.

So...Harper. Nice to see a Mets fan acknowledge this.

Best hitter on a playoff team, if no one stands out, best pitcher on a playoff team, if you still can't find anyone, best statistics overall

Best pitcher on a playoff team - no, unless it's a shockingly fantastic season and there are no stellar hitters numbers-wise that year

Kershaw in 2014 seems like a good example, Stanton could have gotten it, but his team sucked

Cespedes' September has been unreal as has the Mets'.  I think he has a legitimate case for NL MVP.

Ok j/k.  My bad Bryce, my bad!!!

Doesn't Bryce now have 9 HRs in the last 11 games?

Bryce Harper for NL MVP, Kris Bryant for NL Rookie of the Year. And Harper is the younger one.

Might have been the MLB network but there was a comparison of the numbers for 2015 for Trout, Harper and Donaldson.    Harper looked pretty damn good.      I liked his interview after the game as well.    I see him emerging as the leader on this team.    He still has his young'un moments but overall, he's the guy you want long term.     Pay the man.

Yep, the only question that remains about this guy is his ability to stay healthy. He has the talent, the attitude, the drive....

Looking back down the list at OPS+ is pretty impressive too.  Best in a long time, especially for someone not named Bonds.  Would be pretty much impossible to not give him MVP with an OPS+ over 200.  (Currently at 204, so might not finish over 200, but still!)

Pay the guy and extend him please.  A couple of flaws as others have pointed out and still has some growing (emotionally) to do but they need to get this done.

It's a better season than peak Pujols. It would be absolutely crazy for him not to win MVP in my opinion. There is no Miguel Cabrera out there.

He is not extendible.   He's a Boras client.

well he's a fool.  do you know what kind of risk he's taking waiting for three more years and all teh possibilities of injury and regression?  He could sign for 300-400 million right now, and still be a FA in his lat 20s or early 30s.  If I was staring that kind of money in the face i'd eliminate the risk asap.

All is possible; as pointed out below he is taking a major risk by waiting.

Yea I'd say the best thing for Harper and the Nats would be to do a 6 or 7 year extension then he can sign another huge contract when he is 28 or 29.

You wouldn't have chosen Boras for an agent.   If Harper is willing to defy Boras, then why did he chose him for an agent?   The answer is obvious, Boras gets alot of money for his clients. But if you chose him, you do what he tells you.

It's always better to get more money up front since it is worth more than future dollars--so if he can get lots more money the next two years by signing a new contract that could outweigh any benefits down the road.  And as noted he came up so young he could sign for 5-7 years and still get another big free agent contract after that.  If he wants to look in his own clubhouse for an example of the waiting risk he can do that with Ryan Z.

And (unfortunately for us), in Bryce's case the direction from Boras is more entrenched than in most others.  Boras masterminded the Bryce's long term plan from early on, including finishing high school early (with a GED?) and starting in a wood bat JUCO league so he would be ready to be drafted after having already played 2 years of wood bat college ball as an 18 year old.  It was a great plan and it's hard to argue with the results.  An important part of the plan was also starting the clock early so that Bryce would hit full free agency as young as possible.  There is no extension in the offing.

Well my point is that he's going to have to drop Boras as his agent if he wants to sign an extension.  I agree, it would be the smart thing to do, but I don't think he's willing to drop Boras.

There is precedent.   ARod defied Boras and went back to the Yankees on his own after Boras had rejected the Yankee's offer.

But I still don't think Harper will do it.
