Harper should always bat in the 1st inning.

Who is your clean up hitter, especially before Rendon or one of the old injured guys get back and get well?

If it is Clint, then hit Harper 2d, especially if Span is out.

Danny should be batting behind Harper.  His GB/FB is a career-best 1.05 - you need a guy who can elevate batting behind your best hitter, not a guy who is a threat to GIDP like Ramos and Robinson.

Harper should always bat in the 1st inning.
Batting third, if batters 1 and 2 make outs, the only damage Harper can do is hit a homerun.  If he instead is fourth, he could hit that same homerun leading off the second inning. Not much difference.  If either batter 1 or 2 gets on, then Harper batting fourth will bat (assuming no DP).
If batting third, with two outs nobody on, he hits a double: wouldn't you rather have that same double with nobody out?
And, batting fourth, there is more chance that he will come up with two or even three runners on, than batting third.
I think your most productive hitter should be fourth.

...and with Span, Rendon and Escobar hitting in front of him, the chances are pretty good that he bats with a man on base in the first anyway...

Blue mentioned a couple of the best stat guys around who happen to agree with you.

Essentially, the stat guys will tell you that your best hitters should hit 1, 2 and 4, with 1 having maybe more OBP in his OPS and 4 being more of a slugger.  3 most often comes up with 2 outs, so walks are a lot less important.  You are not looking for walks so much there.  4 leads off more often than any position except 1, so walks and OBP are more important there than 3.

Of course, all this depends on the real skills of the players.  I kind of like Escobar batting 3d in this line up because he does not K much and puts balls in play.  If guys are on, he's moving them along (not a big DP guy), and if bases are empty, he has a decent shot at getting on for Harper.

Yes, and there are extreme cases.  For example suppose you had a lineup of Harper plus seven duds who NEVER get on base.  Then you'd put a premium on Harper batting as much as possible.  In fact, he'd probably bat 1.

Bat Harper leadoff. Let hit leadoff homers, a la Brady Anderson

Who would you hit 3rd?

Danny, maybe, but I prefer more contact.  Escobar if Werth is leadoff.  I kind of like Danny between Harper and Clint. That way, he might see more lefties.  Best case though is a healthy Span and Harper 4th, with Rendon and Escobar 2d and 3d.

Ideally for me,

Denard
Escobar
Rendon
Harper
Danny
Zimmermann
Werth
Ramos

Those bottom three can be mixed around a little but I don't see any reason to do anything else. Danny second would use his speed, sure, but then where do you put a singles-machine like Escobar? Rendon third gives him more RBI opportunities with all the slugging he does, same with Harper.

Ramos has been productive but I think you hope Zim and Werth will be a bit more so if they can get healthy, also less threat of a DP. I think Werth's power will be sapped for the year. Pray for good things from Zim.

I would move Zim to the 2 and Werth 6th then Escobar 7th.  Suddenly your bottom of the order features a .300 hitter and a guy who put up 5.0 WAR last year.  Makes it harder to pitch around Bryce.

I too prefer Harper hitting 3rd. Ideally Span and Rendon as 1-2. I'm okay with Escobar at 4 since he's a good contact guy who can drive Harper in if/when he hits for extra bases.

Something like....(when were fully healthy)

Span
Rendon
Harper
Escobar
Zimmerman
Werth
Ramos
Espinosa

Escobar will never bat behind Bryce for the same reasons Ramos shouldn't: ground ball machine that is slow.  Escobar is an ideal bottom of the order guy once everyone is healthy.

Didnt see this until today.  I really have never had much hate for the Orioles or Ravens......but jesus are they becoming some of the worst humans on the internet/planet.  That is one of the most poorly written, blown out of proportion article ive ever seen.

It is. That's why it really doesn't deserve any attention.

I've read he hits only in the cage. There were long stretches of time, I've heard, where Ortiz hit only off a tee.
