I think that if you PAY THE MAN HIS MONEY, he stays. Right now there's a huge disconnect between what he and Boras probably want (100% of what his most optimistic projection should get) and what he legitimately has earned as a very-good-but-not-great player thus far.

I think there are a lot of people who think he wants to take off and go to the Yankees, even if we offered the same amount of money. I don't think so.

Bryce strikes me as a guy who understands the appeal of staying in one place his entire career - he's said he wants to be like Jeter and Ripken in that regard. If we were a piss-poor team, I'd say he's gone, but we project to be a good team for a while with our ownership spending and overall management, so I think the chances of him signing here long term are pretty decent.

I have no doubt he would love to stay with a team his whole career. But that doesn't mean he will. It still comes down to who offers the most money and where he can win. Sure, if the Nats pony up a matching offer when the time comes, or at least close enough to a higher offer from a bad team, he stays. But players defer to the agents to work out the best deals for them, especially if their agent is Scott Boras.

In the near term, we get to enjoy having him on the team.

Literally everyone knows the Nats won't sign Scherzer!

Source?
bullcrap- how many people talk about not extending guys or Scherzers contract structure in terms of saving money for Harper? This town has a football outlook when it comes to free agents -i.e. too many people assume that if a team wants a player they won't let him go
Who have we signed to a long term deal? Zimmerman. Instead, we can't work something out with Desmond. Can't work out something with Jordan Zimmermann (but for some reason have 200 million for Scherzer).

Harper is a Boras client. He's as good as gone.

Oh I totally agree. I just don't buy that he's totally gone when he hits free agency and it's a foregone conclusion. I'm going to enjoy him while he's here and hopefully he's good enough for me to want him to stay here for 20 years.

Bullcrap promises form an underwhelming player. He should shut his mouth and put out before making claims like that.

Oh, by all means he should conform to your image of him.

The "where's my ring" quote was taken completely out of context.  He wasn't talking about a championship, he was overheard talking to his ex-fiance after she broke up with him.

Hell, he probably paid upwards of $100,000 for the ring; I'd want it back too.

If he paid 100k for a ring, he deserves to not get it back . . .

Actually, it was more a misquote.  This guy is still a kid.  He was not referring to jewelry. He was talking about a Ring-Ding,  a hockey-puck shaped chocolate-covered choclate cake with cream in the middle made by Drake's (similar to a hostess ding dong).

“If the Nationals let it happen, I’m all for it,” Harper said in a 1-on-1 interview with CSN. “I’ve always said that. I’ve said it since Day 1. Right when I was drafted I said, ‘If you look at the guys like Cal Ripken, [Derek] Jeter, Chipper Jones … you look at these guys who stayed with their franchise forever, they’ve been so good with their fans, they’ve been so good with their organization. I would love to do that. That’s something I would love to pride myself on and know that this team wants me here, I’ve been here since the beginning. I want to be here for 20 years.”

Because he is awesome and you want him here or because he sucks and you're sad? Can't keep up with you.

Something else for the haters: https://twitter.com/brentsower/status/572465673202499585

He can do his FA announcement as a TV show a la LaBron, but stage it like a showcase showdown selection. Each competing team puts together a prize package for his consideration.
