Schoenfield's take on the $500M.

http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/67090/bryce-harper-the-first-500-million-player

it seems the Nats have nothing to lose by waiting another year.  Sign him now and there's downside if he gets hurt again, but if he has another year like last, he'll still be looking at roughly the same extension.

...and the Lerners should feel fortunate to be the one writing the checks.  Wild horse won't be able to pull Kay Varner off of him.
Why the hell do you care about his girlfriend? She doesn't matter one goddamn bit, but you always bring her up.

I'm sure plenty of baseball players are married to gold diggers. So freaking what?

There's reasons to do it now.  The Nats can offer a bit of a safety net by giving him a big deal now.  To cash in on a big free agent contract, he'll have to stay healthy for 3 years.  As he gets closer to free agency, he has less incentive to sign with the Nats.

I wonder if anyone (on either side of the negotiations) is considering a looming salary correction on the horizon.  Salaries have boomed thanks to the RSN craziness.  With ESPN announcing they've lost 7% of their subscribers and with it all sorts of job cuts and panic, you have to think that RSNs are in the same boat and the silly tv deals could come apart at the seams in a couple years.

It would be great if that were to happen but I don't see that occurring unless there's a legislative change or other major style shake up to kill the automatic carriage fees for the RSNs.

It's already happening CSN Houston went bankrupt when no one would carry them and SportsNet could be heading that way too.

This is one of the freakiest WNFF subjects that keeps getting brought up. The posts that ended up getting split off from this thread were terrible.

cord cutting and cord trimming are already taking their toll on espn as people move to either skinny video bundles or unbundled OTT online options.  The RSNs tend to be on the same packages as ESPN, so if ESPN has taken a 10% hit already, then RSNs are already going to be feeling that same pain, and every indication is it will only get worse and worse.

Here is the likely 2018-19 free agent class:

Bryce Harper
Clayton Kershaw
Josh Donaldson
Andrew McCutchen
Dallas Keuchel
Jose Fernandez
Matt Harvey
Manny Machado
David Price
Jason Heyward

Now, right this moment, that's a spectacularly great ballclub you could build with those guys. In 2019...we'll see. And if they're all healthy and awesome, the 10 of the might sign for a combined, oh, say, 3 billion dollars.

We'll have extended Bryce to a monster deal by then.  Well sign machado and Kershaw
