Boras has to realize that there is some reward in taking the money now, doesn't he?
No. Absolutely not.  Reward for who? Not for Boras, which is what matters, to Boras.  The more important question is whether Bryce realizes it because ultimately it's his choice.

What I find so astounding in this thread is the total amount of dollars being suggested to re-sign Harper. It is equal to what the Lerners paid MLB for the whole freakin' team.

We really don't know the "real" Harper, he hasn't given us a clue. Is he going to go for the biggest bucks or sign with a team he wants to play for, for less.  And the fact that Boras is his agent doesn't mean anything, he signed on with Boras when he was a child.    If he's going for the big bucks, wish him luck and let him go.  Me, I have not ruled out the possibility that money isn't the most important factor in the choice of a team to sign with.

I've been reading comments from various sports pages about Harper's MVP, and the Yankees fans seem dead certain that it's just a matter of time until Harper is in pinstripes.  While it's certainly possible, I don't think it's a foregone conclusion. Harper has always found his own unique path, and there's no reason to think that when he becomes a free agent, he'll suddenly become an obedient Boras puppet.   Even if he doesn't stay with the Nats, that doesn't automatically mean that he's Yankee-bound.

I remember the self-entitled Yankees fans thinking Alfonso Soriano was going to sign with them, too. Just wishing it doesn't make it so.

Inflation seems to move super quickly in baseball. Look at the contract predictions for this offseason - totally mediocre guys like Yovani Gallardo might be getting $15M per season. If Dexter Fowler signs for $12M/year, then Bryce Harper is worth $45M/year.

Yeah...I think whomever signed off on the Scherzer deal is kicking themselves in the ass these days.  There was no need for that kind of massive overpay with Bryce's money coming due right around the corner.

He'd probably be a star for all 12 of those years, too.

Unless they know they're not going to re-sign Harper for any amount of money because he wants to be a Yankee. In which case, they're trying to maximize the three years they have him and try and get a ring.

The likelihood that the Nats get a return that will equal the production of Harper in a trade is very very low. He needs a monster contract tonstay and the Nats should offer it. It goes beyond on the field stuff.

Not at all true.  They couold receive a prospect boatlaod for him that could someday comprise at least 2-3 major league players, one or two of which might be star caliber.  It would enable us to be a deeper franchise over the net 5-10 years and have the financial flexibility to supplement that talent with several other high quality FAs.

As many have noted, Harper has matured dramatically over the past year or so. Part of that maturation process, I'll bet, is loss of infatuation with the Yankees. I was infatuated with them (even though I hated them) and I've grown out of it.

Just watching the Mid Atlantic Sports report, today hosted by some guy from Baltimore and Andy Pollen (Andy Polley). They talked  about the MVP and Baltimore guy asked Pollen this question:

Who is the face of DC sports?  The choices:

John Wall
 Alex Ovechkin
Kirk Cousins
Bryce Harper

Guess who Pollen picked?

He said RGIII would have been picked 2 yrs ago--but now it is Cousins. Ovi 2nd. Harper 3rd. Reminded me of how much I hated him and his Redskin nonsense.
Trashed baseball subtly--said it was elitist and football was for people who worked hard for 70 hours a week.

Baseball elitist???

We were about 5 years old. Had a scuffed baseball (no softball), one bat, and everybody had a cheap glove. Played in a vacant lot across the alley from our houses in Michigan Park neighborhood of NE. Down at the end of the block was a bigger vacant lot where Big Kids played.

We did not need spikes or uniforms or batting gloves.

Did not need helmets and shoulder pads and knee pads and all the rest of football gear.

Elitist? Bosh!
