Right. So if we can just figure out a way for Stamkos, Kane, Crosby, Bergeron, Doughty, and Vlasic to all play on the same team with Ovi ...

We'll need Price as well...

They also had fantastic supporting casts and could go three lines deep with anyone in the world. Caps have basically been a one line team with soft defense for five years. But the Caps haven't won jack crap and are basically the prime  example in all of sports of having a superstar and doing nothing with him. Again, I'm betting every Caps fan in the area would trade Ovi for a trip to the Stanley Cup.

so basically your argument is

"you can't win with a superstar unless you also surround him with good players"

hot freaking take!

You forgot the rest. You can win without a superstar and having multiple good players makes it more likely to win than with a superstar.

Get everything you can out of him now or after next season. Set the Nationals up  for the next five to ten years with a ton of very good, cost controlled talent.

you forgot the best part, not only is that team giving us enough to win now, but for the next ten years- apparently there is a team so stocked that they have a ten year run in their system, and they'll trade it all away for three years of Harper

It bothers me when people don't have the tact to not throw the former staff under the bus

Basically, Rizzo doesn't sound confident he can sign him. He's gone in two years
Three, but whatevs. I'm going to read too much into what Rizzo says. He can't really say anything else. I'd love to see him here for life. I'd love to see the Lerners step up to the plate to make it happen. I don't know that I expect that to happen this offseason, though.

He won't leave.  The traditional problems with long term deals don't apply to him.  He still has 6 years til he starts his offensive prime.  Give him 12 yrs/$336M ($28MAAV).

No chance he signs that.

+1000.

Look, he has 3 arbitration years left that will pay him something like $30-40 million, depending on if he wins the MVP this season. Mike Trout is getting $34.1 million a year in his free agency years. Stanton is getting $32 million a season at peak.

There's no reason to quibble over a million here or there if it means you actually sign him through his prime (and he's GOING to get an opt-out  by his age-30 season anyways).

So just add 10 years @ $35 million a year to his arbitration years, give him the biggest contract and biggest AAV, and get it over with. Give him an opt-out somewhere in his age 29-30 seasons.

13/$390 million, give or take.
