Sometimes drunk white boys have rap battles, and sometimes they just so happen to be on the day that Jr. Seau offed himself. And sometimes my friends have camera phones. I came up with this while drinking too much one time. (I'm only including it here because it's a rap about dead famous people that I thought was funny at the time)

I think I read where he said that he damaged his hands so bad playing that song that he more or less could not play as fast ever again.

Jack Pardee

The Washington Redskins are sad to announce the passing of former player and coach Jack Pardee. A statement from owner Daniel Snyder:

"In his time both on the field and on the sideline, Jack Pardee will forever be a part of the Washington Redskins' legacy. He will be remembered not just as a linebacker for the 1972 NFC Champions, nor as just the coach for our franchise. He will be remembered as someone whose spirit truly embodied the values that we associate with the burgundy and gold. My thoughts - and the thoughts and well wishes of the entire Washington Redskins family - are with the Pardee family this evening."

RIP to the greatest movie critic of all time. Roger Ebert is dead at age 70.

the first thing i've done for years is read his review "after" I watch a movie. I rarely disagree with his take.

Ebert's wife said they were leaving the hospital to go home for hospice when he looked at her, smiled, and died. What a way to go.

He had been to hell and back with his cancer over the last few years, having most of his lower jaw removed and being unable to eat and speak, still, he was a proficient writer and always seemingly in good spirits.

Guys, I have to admit, I dropped out of the gameday thread and stopped posting for a few hours because of this. I felt like I'd been hit by a train. Roger Ebert was my hero and my ideal as a writer and critic; there are two, maybe three people who have ever taught me so much about writing as he did. It goes way beyond the movies for me, for whatever reason.

On another board I frequent, I wrote a short post about his impact on my life.

this man has been one of my heroes and role models my entire career as a writer. The words I string together in real life, for my two jobs and writing purely for pleasure, reflect a lot of Ebert's philosophy of style:

1. say what you think and feel
2. say it clearly
3. don't pass yourself off as an all-knowing arbiter of truth; let the reader decide how they feel

Ebert's technique of reviewing movies based on whether they succeed in their goals, rather than whether they succeed in his eyes, might have resulted in "grade inflation," but it also resulted in far greater wisdom, helpfulness, and clarity. He was at his best not when he said "this movie is great and here's why," but when he said "I love this movie and here's why." In Roger Ebert's reviews we learned not just about whether the movie was good: we learned about Ebert, we learned about humanity, we learned about the nature of art, we learned about ourselves.

So yeah. My hero's gone. Physically he was a wreck. As an author and as an artist, he was at the zenith of his powers.

One wonders if he knew. These are the final lines of his final blog post:

"So on this day of reflection I say again, thank you for going on this journey with me. I'll see you at the movies."
