Closest I think I've seen to what Scherzer did today was Pedro's 17 K no walk game v. the Yankees.  However, the one hit was a Chili Davis homer, so he was charged with one earned run.  Scherzer's I think was better, due to the quality of the hit and the shut out, despite giving up a second base runner via the BB.

More because fWAR for pitchers is primarily based on FIP and Scherzer's FIP has been great this year due to his ability to strike guys out.

I don't care about "very risky".  This isn't football, with a salary cap.  Rizzo and the Lerners agreed to spend the Lerners' money; it's otherwise sunken cost because of the lack of a salary cap.  If we even win one world series thanks to Scherzer he will be worth the investment.
