This went badly for you last time, didn't it?

Yeah on the Saturn and that's what's due soon.   I've only put 2,000 miles on it in two years.   If I go through the road test and don't get a letter (failed) at least I'll know the garage is gonna hose me.   :)

Thing about it though is the Saturn is an odd machine.   I might go through the road side test a few times just to see if she'll pass once.

Smaller gas turbos are probably a better bet for more fuel efficient cars.  At least they are becoming more available here.  The VW fiasco has soured me on the idea of efficient "clean" diesels.

It's a garage. It's in its nature to hose you.

BTW, those two sentences should earn me valuable grammar bonus points.

If I can pass the road test, I can avoid the garage.   It's good to know the hose is comin'.   :)

Yeah, it's really too bad that this is going to sting VW sales over all. That new 1.8L gasoline engine they are producing is supposed to be a work of art.

At least, if you believe it meets the emission standards. :)

Ford's 1.0 I3 is supposed to be pretty good too, they sell it here in the Fiesta.  It's the engine Hammond's Fiesta has in the Top Gear episode where the final challenge is to run out of fuel before arriving at Chernobyl.

Seems frighteningly small, doesn't it?

Urea is injected into the exhaust as a catalyst to reduce NOx. Putting more fuel into a relatively cool exhaust stream (at least as compared to the very high temperature combustion chamber, where fuel injected under very high pressure into highly compressed air, and combusts) couldn't possibly reduce emissions.

Diesels will always be dirty engines because combustion is far less complete than it is in a gasoline engine. Save it for big vehicles that need ungodly torque to start big loads.

Interestingly, the reason diesel vehicles go further on a gallon of fuel is because diesel contains more energy per gallon. They are not more efficient than a gasoline engine. Based on miles per BTU, they are basically identical.

Sure but when it's basically the same price point, it's financially much more efficient.

True. In '07 when I was fueling my TDI, diesel had become a lot more expensive than gasoline. And they were very expensive to maintain - always needed a turbo waste gate valve solenoid or an induction cleaning or something that cost $500+.

It cost a lot to keep that thing running.

And it ran *great* on biodiesel (refined soybean oil). Just burbled along smelling great with lots of punch. I ran it on 100% bio for probably 25K. Then petro-diesel prices dropped and I couldn't bring myself to keep paying $4 for bio.

Sure but when it's basically the same price point, it's financially much more efficient.

Even when it was 30 cents more it was still cheaper!

123 HP @ 6,000 and 125 lb/ft @ 2,500.  That's better than the base engine in the Fiesta, 120 @ 6350 and 112 @ 5000.

That's a lot of ponies out of a 1 liter plant...turbo or not...

My Harley only gets 98hp out of 1.55 liters.,,but it only weighs 750 pounds too...

That's great power for such a small engine.  My 1980 Honda Civic 1500 cc engine generated 67 HP.

I had the 5 speed, it didn't seem slow to me at the time.  Maybe having no power steering or brakes made the difference.

EDIT: Hello Nate.

So, I'm sittin' here watching hockey and the wife comes back in the house (works nights), "Check engine light is on."

The good news it's her Explorer and it passed emissions in December.   :P

EDIT: Hello Nate.

Mine was my first car and my first and only automatic.  It felt ok until the distributor cap needed replaced and the shop never did get the timing right again.  After that it wasn't the same.

I still kind of miss that car though.

Also, shhhhh.  I'm under cover.

Nobody's going to buy it at 250K. Might as well drive it into the ground, then tow it to the "auto recycling center."

Pretty impressive, pwc.
