...and Joe Moore?

Janet had probably left for San Francisco by 1984...
Remember Joe Moore for sure.

I got curious and looked up Jim Leahey who did the UH games.  Football and baseball. Passed away at 80 in 2023.  His son does sports there now.

In what may, tragically, be the final 'American Experience', 'Hard Hat Riot' is an excellent analysis of how the Democrats lost the Blue Collar vote, and of how the events of May 1970 led to the emergence of the modern Republican movement. Definitely worth your time.

If it is the last, then what a way to bow-out - 'American Experience' at it's best...

Been watching the latest BBC / PBS co-production - 'Once Upon A Time In Space'. It abandons the usual technical / scientific history of space exploration to examine the subject from a human and emotional aspect - from space idealism to the commercialization and politicization of space. An interesting approach, and well worth your time. No date yet, for US broadcast, so this is an advance heads-up.

Just watched what, sadly, really is the final 'American Experience' - 'Kissinger' is a well balanced profile, and analysis, of the life and career of Dr Henry Kissinger. The contributors are drawn from across the poiitical spectrum, so many views are represented. Some interesting insights - such as it was Kissinger's attitude towards Ellsberg that started Nixon down the road to Watergate. It's in two long-form parts, so does demand 2.75 hours, in total, but is well worth your time. Written and produced by long time AE contributor Barak Goodman, which is probably why funding was found to complete it. A fine end to the series, although - without wishing to get into politics (please) - the end of AE must be one of the greatest acts of cultural vandalism ever performed by a nation against itself.

What shall we now watch instead?  'Stranded On Honeymoon Island', anyone?... ;)

Not sure if it'll get a run-out in the US but, if you get the chance to see 'A Choral Pilgrimage With The Sixteen', then don't miss. The Sixteen are one of the world's leading choirs - this is a live performance at Peterborough Cathedral. Their performance of Part's Magnificat is particularly impressive.

Just watched 'Trump And The Tech Titans' - an interesting analysis of the relationship between the President and BIg Tech. Shown, over here, in the BBC 'Panorama' current affairs slot - however, I bring it to your attention as in style it looks ready made to be shown, in the US, in the 'Frontline' slot on PBS. Well worth your time.

(no politics in reply, please - this is just a heads-up to a program you may find interesting).

Very welcome news - funding has clearly been found to complete what was a 'paused' film for 'American Experience'. 'Bombshell' examines how the US aimed to shape the narrative over the use of atomic weapons on Japan. To be broadcast in Jan '26.

The most recent 'All Creatures' (Season Six) was shown here in it's usual 'run-up-to-Christmas' slot. Covers the period to the end of WW2 and the first post-war Christmas. On generally good form - but I should perhaps warn that the Christmas Special is something of a tear-jerker...Soon to air on PBS.

Finally caught up with the delayed (so still Season 37, even though we've crossed the calendar year) 'American Experience' - 'Bombshell' (see previous post for details). Probably the most polemic film since 'Wilmington 1898' - however, if approached with that in mind, it is an interesting insight into the relationship between media and government / military in times of conflict or crisis. The eighty minute run-time is outside the usual AE format, but it's well worth your time.

Binged the last 3 episodes of Lincoln Lawyer last night to finish it. Excellent season, and they announced #5 is signed.

Just watched 'Michael Jackson - An American Tragedy', from the generally reliable 72 Films (3 x 60 minutes). A very disturbing study of fame, money and power - definitely worth your time, even if (like me) you were never a fan of the music.

It's branded as a BBC series but I'll be amazed if it isn't shown in the US.

Were we watching the same series? Plenty of detailed coverage of the abuse allegations (including the cynical way the Jackson team approached them) and of Jackson's cynical attitude to 'strategizing' for more fame and sales. I'm surprized the Estate approved it, as it pulls no punches over their approach ('the Jackson money-making machine rolls on...').

Finished season 2 of Beef last week. It has no relation to season 1 (except the writer/creator). Overall I enjoyed it, but it was nowhere near as good as S1 (which is one of the best shows ever IMHO).

Also finished Pluribus and thought the ending was really disappointing, especially since they may not be a season 2 until 2028. I wouldn't waste my time with it.

The newest season of Your Friends and Neighbors has been very good.

Just watched 'Red Storm Rising - The Struggle For The American Communist Party', on PBS. Despite the title, it's actually an interesting study of radical Left politics from the Nineteenth Century to the 1950's (Syndicalist/ Anarchist/ Communist/Socialist) - an often forgotten aspect of US political history. There is also the mix of the personal and the political, through the conflict between the Syndicalist, William Foster and the Communist, Earl Browder, and how their poilitcal views changed over time.

Even if you completely disagree with the politics, it's still a fascinating history. With a higher budget, and a little more 'polish', it might have been an 'American Experience' - a counterpoint to 'Nazi Town USA', which examined the radical Right up to the 1940's.
