The scene was really brutal and totally unnecessary to the plot. The showrunners this season have done a pretty terrible job as a whole. The Sand Snakes plot is a hilarious debacle.
I'm more pissed about the fact that they've freaked up so much of the story for so many characters than I am about a sexist TV trope, honestly.
It was necessary to the plot.
You needed to get Sansa in Winterfell for when Stannis comes. Theon as well.
Putting them together was just tying it all up to get to that point...what they did with it is totally up to them.
And if you are going to blame anyone...blame that fat bastard GRRM. If he wants to dick around and not finish the books well the show will continue on.
