I grew up with Wheel and Jeopardy just about every night in my parents/grandparents household.  I imagine the story is similar for a lot of people.  That's not to say the shows don't stand on their own, but I would wager that kind of foundation probably lends itself to a deeper connection.  Alex Trebek felt like part of the family.  I don't have any particularly strong feelings about Ken Jennings the person one way or another, but to me his connection to Alex and the the show's history puts him head and shoulders above anyone else they could possibly consider for the job.

All that stuff aside, trivia in general is pretty popular across a broad range of demos, and inertia is a hell of a thing.  Nobody really likes change
