Yeah, if Rendon is asking for $30 million+, we're basically debating Harper once again, only Rendon is older but more proven/consistent.

Good thing we have...(checks notes) no third base prospects!
I maintain Harper could have played third if he had moved there instead of the outfield.

Except the arguement was always you could get Rendon for less and that would leave room to add players to the payroll. I'm not so sure that is the case anymore.

What I’m taking away from this is that players are opting to extend rather than hit free agency because of the current market. So that would make it more likely for Rendon to extend. Arenado was more highly regarded and he opted not to test free agency. I assume that he liked where he was and was scared of the state of free-agency.

Or that players happy in their situation or who want to cash in without maximizing their earnings sign extensions (in this case after firing Boras)

I'd be fine giving Rendon the Scherzer deal. 7/210 sounds about right.

7 years seems a bit much for a guy who will be 29 this year.

Anyone starting to think we won't extend Rendon?

Not at that price. He isn't worth anywhere near that IMHO.

So I immediately thought that Rendons price went way up. Now... I’m not so sure.

Rockies and Arenado are a perfect match. Nolan has played exactly as many games at Coors as away lifetime.

He is a .320 at Coors. .263 away. He’s young. And he is now the face. But would he ever get that via Free Agency? Possibly but unlikely. He’s not the offensive top league player without Coors field.

Rendon is the same player at Nats Park vs away. He is older as well.

Rendon can certainly get $30 million a year via free agency. But it won’t (unless the market drastically changes) get that beyond 3 years.

So it’s probably still $25 million a year for 5 years.

It will be fun to go through this again next year with Rendon. Won’t it?

Try to focus. We’re talking about 3rd basemen in this thread.

What does it matter how many 3B are out there next year?  Machado got a big deal this year.

I think that MAGA hat fell over your eyes.

OK... which part?

Rendon will be 30 if he enters free agency (Nolan 28 this year). Unless he wins something this season, he has won a single Silver Slugger.

So how many years is he gonna get? Max 6 I'd think. How much a year over 5 or 6? He'd get $30 over 2 or 3, but adding years starts to subtract dollars per year. Wasn't it reported he was seeking 6 years at $150ish? $25 a year.

Educate me Slateman.

I was spending this off season thinking Rendon would be scared away by the free agency market this year.  And then 2 third basemen go and sign for 300 and 260.

The time to make a deal is now though.  Something like 210/7 starting this year with options after 3 or 4 years sounds beneficial to everyone.  Let him start making big money now, give him security, and options for more money.  He gives us 3 more guaranteed years.

Boras will "take" whatever Rendon tells him to take. Just because he is able to wussy whip Harper doesn't mean Rendon is a big sissy-ass too.

Looks like the Arenado contract replaces 2019, so it's an 8-year deal and not an 8-year extension starting 2020. That takes him through his age-35 season. An equivalent extension for Rendon would be 6 years, starting in 2020.

I don't even know if it's worth quibbling about a million here or there, but I'd have no problem settling on 6/$180 or something like that. Something close, but slightly below Arenado. Machado also receiving $30 million a year through his age-35 season. It seems like a pretty set market, so just get it done. Hopefully Boras won't be an jerk and demand a longer contract (ending age) or more money than two players at the same position who are clearly seen as better players.

I never thought we would, players don’t hire Boras if they don’t expect to eventually test free agency

The difference is that Rendon has come out and said he would like to sign an extension and stay with the Nats. You don't say that if you and your agent have a "let's test the free agent market" strategy.
