Source: Nats and top pick Erick Fedde are drawing close to a deal. It will almost certainly get before today's 5 p.m. deadline.

If Rizzo gets them both, he really is a damn fine negotiator.  He really has been a marvel with the draft, even if Matt Purke is just a big old bust.

Same thing happened with Stras and Harper. A lot of people feared that they wouldn't get signed.

i don't miss the days when the most exciting part of the season was seeing if we'd sign our #1 pick or not.

Certainly not the most exciting now, but definitely still worth noting.  After giving up a 1st rounder last year for Soriano, I'm excited to see the Nats draft in the 1st round again, and potentially pull in yet another high profile injury guy.  I hope this guy gets healthy and him and Giolito are the next Strasburg and Zimmermann.

I think Andrew Saurez is getting bad advice.

Suarez came as a surprise. “He thought he was going to sign,” his college coach said. “I fully expected him to sign." http://wapo.st/1oRU8Ca

Nope going back to school. That's the right move for him.

I can break out the signing stuff if you think that junks up the thread.  I just wanted new posts about Fedde to go into the original FTP thread.

Disagree that Byler made the right move. He might have been a slight steal in the 9th but its not like hes a first or second rounds either. Hes a 4/5 rounder and it will be hard for him to improve a lot next year. With no leverage, hes taking a risk. Theres the chance he has a down season and falls out of the top ten.

Not sure what Suarez is thinking.  I never agree with pitchers thst turn down big money because an injury could happen at any time. Especially a guy who's already had shoulder surgery. Especially a guy that isnt projected as a frontline guy.  Heckled possibly pull out an extra 100k or so with a good year but he could also go the other way. Had he signed this year, hed be in Potomac, with an outside chance at Harrisburg. Instead, hell be waiting to sign again. Not sure what was up with his situation.

Byler is playing with house money. 9th round slot of $145K isn't significantly better than 40th round at $100K. Next year doesn't appear to be as deep, so why not take the shot at a 5th round or so slot?

Suarez is the curious one, will he really move much higher even with a great year?

Very few drafted that late get offered that much. And, Im not sure about the relevance. If he slides next year because of a poor year, he has zero leverage. If he slides to the 15th, he may not even get that $100k.

Fedde leaves for Viera tomorrow to begin long, slow rehab from Tommy John surgery. Got advice today from Strasburg: "Trust the system."
